Kiss your 100-watt lightbulb goodbye
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 1/1/11 | Tracy Seipel

Californians can start saying goodbye to traditional 100-watt incandescent light bulbs now that the state has become the first in the country to require a new standard for the screw-base bulbs.

Experts say the new rules, which took effect New Year's Day, will save residents money and energy. California is already the nation's leader in energy efficiency standards.

As of Saturday, what used to be a 100-watt light bulb manufactured and sold in California will have to use 72 watts or less. The 72-watt replacement bulb, also called an energy saving halogen light, will provide the same amount of light, called lumens, for lower energy cost.

Similar new standards for traditional 75-watt, 60-watt and 40-watt incandescent bulbs will go into effect in California over the next few years, with wattages reduced to 53, 43 and 29 respectively.

The new rule does not ban incandescent light bulbs; it just requires those bulbs to be 25 to 30 percent more efficient. And it only affects incandescent light bulbs manufactured after 2011, not light bulbs already in use or on store shelves.

BTW, the new bulbs are 5 or 6 times the cost, they are very short living ... and are super toxic when tossed in the trash.

No, the CA law is requiring more efficient incandescent bulbs, NOT the CFLs.

“’Kid, I want you to go and sit down on that bench that says Group W .... NOW kid!!’

And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W’s where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean ‘n’ ugly ‘n’ nasty ‘n’ horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me and said, “Kid, whad’ya get?”

I said, “I didn’t get nothing, I had to pay $50 and pick up the garbage.” He said, “What were you arrested for, kid?” And I said, “Littering.” And they all moved away from me on the bench there, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I said, “And creating a nuisance.” And they all came back, shook my hand, and we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing, father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the bench.

If your CFL actually used 100 watts of electricity it would be an immensely bright bulb.

I realize that, retired electronic tech. You're right, what I should have said was 100 Watt equivalent and you're right about them stretching the word equivalent. You can get really tangled up when it comes to measurements in units of lumen and lux.

Halogens are crap. I once had an idiot boozer who worked for a tenant. He almost burned down the office building leaving a halogen torch on next to a drywall wall.

Thank goodness I checked it that night. I found it on and the wall was warm. If I had left it overnight it would have burned the building down.

I have been “hoarding” lightbulbs for 18 months. I now have: 56-60w, 4-100w, 4-90w, 16-40w, and 8 outdoor light bulbs. I do wonder if I have enough for living in NV? I WILL NOT buy any of the crap they will tell us we need.

Note: this is not a CFL.

You noticed, too, that not many folks read the article?

They haven’t used floodlights in LA for over 30 years.

I guess I need to get out more often.

Yeah they do. I just can’t see as well when using them.

They produce the same amount of light, but you can’t see as well???

I don’t purport to be an expert but I’ve studied various types of lighting. The most energy efficient, lowest cost, and brightest bulb to replace traditional incandescent bulbs is the Xenon bulb. Better yet, for non-incandescent lighting, is the LED which is incredibly long-lasting, bright, and requires virtually no maintenance. There is also the Krypton type bulb which is better than the incandescent but inferior to the Xenon. I could go on but the point is that the old, traditional incandescent bulb is obsolete in terms of cost, energy consumption, longevity, and brightness shed. Time to move on!

And the (Quartz) Halogen lamps run super hot. More potential for fire.

Found that's it a crap shoot as to bulb longevity regardless of how careful you are installing them. Use some 500 watt ones in my portable outside work light.

Just toss them on the sidewalk then.

I fondly look back to the days when things were built for function, not political correctness.

The “green lie” is the most costly and ill conceived nonsense I have ever witnessed. It is amazing how many otherwise “intelligent” “educated” people believe that crap.
