Almost a fifth of the people living in the UK today will live to see their 100th birthday, a government study reveals.
According to the Department for Work and Pensions, an estimated 10 million of Britain's current residents, or 17% of the population, will live to be at least 100 years old.
The report predicts that by 2066 there will be at least 507,000 UK residents aged 100 or over, including 7,700 people aged 110 or over.
The figures represent a significant increase on the current 11,800 people in the UK who are at least 100 years old, while those currently aged 110 or over is less than 100.
By 2080, the report projects that there could be as many as 626,900 people in the Britain aged 100 or more, with 21,000 of those being at least 110.
The increased lifespan isnt being seen as all good news though, with an ageing nation expected to put considerable pressure on the UKs pension system.
Pensions Minister Steve Webb said: "These staggering figures really bring home how important it is to plan ahead for our later lives.
"Millions of us will be spending around a third of our lives or more in retirement in the future.

Well, I’ll be dead by then, so I won’t get to see if it’s true or not.
The wife and I were discussing our last trip to Europe the other night. In particular, we were discussing how the French have free health care, free education, lifetime welfare for anyone who wants it...but you have to be French to get all the goodies. Nobody wants to be French.
/No insult intended for my British friends. Except for their food.
With that health care system? Please forgive my skepticism, but I think not.

A British friend recently relayed his mom’s experience “in hospital.” She’s about 68. It was shocking.
She was placed in a hallway for 2 days, for example, and then they literally lost her. Literally. She has dementia so she didn’t know where she was either. 24 HOURS later someone found a nurse who knew where she was - the MATERNITY WARD.
I doubt very seriously that much of Britain will live past 80 if they continue their current medical system.
And the way their country is going down the toilet, they’ll wish they hadn’t.
Not if the moslems have anything to do with it.
One Fifth Of Brits Will Live To 100, Says Report
Only if they can escape the National Health System.
The country is in a long-term bind because of two programs enacted by Democratic Presidents--Social Security and Medicare. The way to fix that is to drastically reduce the population of seniors--who failed to vote for Obama anyway.
I doubt it. The NHS is working (not working) overdrive to reduce that chance from happening.
Why would any Brit even WANT to live to be 100???
the report also indicated that by 2066 the most popular name of those living over 100 would be “Mohammed”.
“Slow” is a relative term. NHS has thousands and thousands of people die each year because of ‘slow’ health care. Like dying waiting for months to get an operation.
Misdiagnoses kill many people as well, and somethign that would have been treatable becomes something deadly and too late to treat, the person is too weak and/or damaged to recover.
To be able to go to the pub and lift a pint with your friends?
Not likely, with National Health, euthanasia, weakened families, out-of-wedlock children, government bankruptcy, and the demographic bulge of Muslims - why would they want to pay pensions and healthcare for old white kaffirs? Throw in a little civil war, and we’re not looking at very many centenarians.
...the other four-fifths are denied treatment by National Health.
Here’s my theory on this: these are post-war Brits who grew up eating almost NOTHING. The rationing went on for years and that generation got used to making due with stuff like oatmeal and whole grain breads and the msot inexpensive fruit and vegetables. They walked everywhere because they could not afford cars.
I have a Cockney friend who is 75 - he looks and acts like 50. He’s definitely going to live to 100, lol!
I meant “making do” not “making due.” One tends to write so fast on these posts. GRRRRRRRR.
