Pool of Dem foes vs. Brown really shallow
Boston Herald ^ | 12/27/10 | Holly Robichaud

One year ago today, the then-Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate, Martha Coakley, was on vacation, presuming her victory was in hand. Scott Brown had a very different idea on the way to the polls.

As 2011 quickly approaches, so does the kick-off for the 2012 election cycle, which means the Democratic National Committee will declare open season on our Republican senator.

Despite their desires, Brown has not made any major gaffes and continues to be far more likable than Anchors-Away John Kerry, who was caught last summer berthing his new yacht in Rhode Island to avoid paying Massachusetts taxes.

During his first year in office, Brown earns high marks. Barbara Anderson, executive director of citizens for limited taxation, grades him with a B+ on his voting record and an overall grade of A. The veteran tax-cutting crusader does not agree with all his votes, but she is “very happy” with his performance.

Outgoing state Senate Republican Leader Richard Tisei says Brown has earned a solid A.

Tea Party members have expressed frustration with Brown’s roll call votes. But Massachusetts is not Alabama and Brown has been politically smart to walk the fine line between being a fiscal conservative and a right-wing radical.

Democrats claim to be licking their chops about taking on Brown, but it seems more likely that the Democrat with the short straw will get the task. Brown has amassed a war chest of $6 million, more than double Kerry’s.

Democrats may hope a Kennedy will step up in spite of their failure to recruit a family member for the special election. Vicki relocated to Boston and has been making public appearances. But flirting with a run and actually running are two different things. And it’s been surprisingly quiet on the Call-Joe-for-Oil front. A Joe K candidacy would be formidable, but it also would be plagued by his skeletons and questions about the $575,000 salary from his non-profit Citizens Energy Corp.

U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch says he’s staying put but has a $702,000 campaign account balance, and there’s U.S. Rep. Mike Capuano, but he has $144,000 cash on hand and $48,000 debt and lost last year’s primary. And don’t count on Gov. Deval Patrick to run like Bill Weld did in 1996. Remember, Deval got back into the Corner Office without a majority of votes.

In such a blue state, you would expect a greater pool of Democrat challengers. It seems one-party domination has not bred a great farm team for the future.

I believe he himself is a military man. Stabbed his brothers in the back. Hate to be in a foxhole with him.

Mitt could have been that guy, with his unpopular term as guv now fading into hazy memory, had he not zigged right from time to time to suit his national aspirations.

Brown betrayed the conservatives who backed and supported him.

You think? I sent him money for one vote, and one vote only, ObamaCare. He totally fulfilled my objective, and while I hoped he was going to be more conservative than he is, I didn't have that expectation.

He’s delivered exactly what I thought he would even as I wrote out the check.

the trouble with traitor brown is:
he voted opposite what he ran on.
over and over and over.

brown did a “Romney-shapeshifting”.

brown can never be trusted again,
and FReepers understand that.

raccoonradio does not because he is
a RomneyBOT, determined to push LOSERS
like his push of Baker.

Raccoon's good people, let's try to remember we're fighting a common enemy here, not each other.

That being said, Brown sucks ass, just like Romney and Baker. Diogenesis is right, Brown can NEVER be trusted again. DADT, START and the banking act BS were the last straws.

Do I expect a Jeff Sessions or Jim DeMint to get elected from MA? I wish, but no. Ok, Snot voted against the DREAM ACT, but that's because his vote didn't matter.

But, Goddamnit, voting for sh*t like DADT and START is unacceptable and wrong, especially for a person that per tends to be a member of the party of Ronald Reagan.

Having an “R” after your name should stand for something. If it doesn't, don't call yourself a Republican; switch to “D” and caucus with the communists.

Seriously, what did you expect of a Northeastern Liberal Republican?

Someone just a hairs width from a RINO.

There are low expectations, which, in this case could more practically be called realistic expectations, and then there are foolish expectations.

A LOT of Freepers had foolish expectations.

At that time ONLY one vote counted, the vote against ObamaCare. He came through on that.

thanks and let me just say it again:

if you can find someone more conservative than Scott in MA by all means run him/her. First they will have to get past Brown who has a lot of money and is _the most popular pol in the state_. Look at the popularity numbers Deval had and HE got re-elected (perhaps thanks in part to Cahill). If this true conservative candidate can make it past Brown—in the state
that re-elected Frank, Tierney, Deval, etc. and put another Dem in the 10th, Keating—and if they can then beat a Dem
then great, but I doubt it will happen. I don’t want to sound negative but I’m trying to be a realist.

I had a sick feeling the day after the Nov elections. Other than a few more Republicans in the state legislature, we got SHUT OUT. Nothing. And sorry, but I’m one who would prefer something to nothing. Suppose Hudak won the 6th,
and we won maybe treasurer, maybe auditor, etc—OK, we got something, but we got nothing—in a year of throw the bums out, we got nothing

By all means run someone against him or maybe even run someone as a third party candidate. Chances are they will
lose, but if they win, then great. Miracles can happen.
Didn’t Reagan actually win once if not twice in MA?

The makeup of the electorate makes it tough for us.
Yes a “RINO” got in as Senator but it’s as close as we can come here; but if you can get someone more to the right to win, more power to ya. At least our neighbors to the north took a swing to the right, and I don’t feel like calling N.H. “North Massachusetts” at this point...

Exactly. I gave some money (not much just $25) to Hudak; even though he lost I felt I did the right thing. (And I had spent an hour on a college radio station helping to interview Bill. I haven’t met John Tierney, who won re-election, at all but I think my money, and my vote, went the right way even if the same old Dem got in, in the end)

“I had a sick feeling the day after the Nov elections.”

I still do. Bwaney lives...Tierney lives...etc. The November shut out still sucks; we really got nothing.

RR won here twice (the last Republican to win MA in 1984). Unfortunately, no Republican presidential candidate is going to win this state ever again. I accept it, the majority of sheeple in MA shouldn't be allowed to butter toast, let alone vote.

I don't see Snot as even 25% of what I'd want from a US Senator. Some of the votes he's cast are going to have long lasting negative effects on the country and there's no reset button.

We can agree to disagree. If Brown wins again, whatever. All I know is I won't lift a finger to help make it happen.

Honestly, I think he's gone in 2012, so this back and forth between everyone is for naught. Like I've posted here and on the Herald, this state's too far gone, it's lights out.

I get a modicum of comfort that NH and ME seem to be getting it, let's see how long it lasts.
