Rep. Conyers reimburses government for son's use of official car By Jordan Fabian - 12/25/10 12:10 PM ET

Michigan Rep. John Conyers said this week that he reimbursed the federal government for his son's use of a vehicle belonging to his congressional office.

The Detroit Free Press reported that the Democrat paid the Treasury Department $5,682 for John Conyers III's use of the 2010 Cadillac Escalade hybrid, which was leased at the expense of taxpayers.

Conyers's son told Detroit police early Thanksgiving morning that the two computers and $27,000 worth of concert tickets were stolen out of the vehicle. The Free Press later reported that court records showed that Conyers III received a speeding ticket while driving the same vehicle in September.

Conyers, the outgoing chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said his son's use of the vehicle was inappropriate and pledged to reimburse the government.

House members are permitted to lease vehicles with office funds but they cannot be used for personal reasons.

Conyers said the $5,682 reimbursement was based the, "Per diem cost of the vehicle for every day my son could conceivably have had access to the vehicle.

"It is unlikely that his usage was anywhere near this high," Conyers told the Free Press. "But, in an abundance of caution, I want to be sure that there is no cost to the taxpayers whatsoever for any possible nonofficial use of the car."

It's cheaper to lease it with tax payer funds than buying one with personal cash.

I love the way these politicians get caught with their hands in the till up to their shoulders. Then, claim they will repay whatever they stole as if that makes it okay. Back when I had a company car if I let anyone drive it and I got caught doing it I would have lost my job immediately, plain and simple. If you or I had done what Charlie Rangle did the IRS would put us under the jail. Witness, the two Americas.

Our gubmint is so far beyond out of control it is ridiculous....

“That’s just about the same amount of cash that his wife Monica took in a bribe and put her in the federal slammer.”

He got the funds from Monica’s stash or from his buddies the Kilpatricks, plenty of embezzled money around Detroit.

When do the investigations start?..
Investigations of whom?..

All the democrats and many of the republicans..
Going to Washington D.C. to get rich should be against the law..
How much are they worth when they go there.. and how much are they worth when they leave?..
There should be a published list..

The police report shows that he claimed he lost:

500 VIP tickets valued at $30
500 general admission tickets valued at $25

No clue to what concert. Looks like the Fillmore Detroit hosts touring bands from Brian Regan to Kesha.

Was he brokering these tickets? Were they a pay off from a supporter of his father? Is this a case of scalping tickets to a popular show (new years?) using daddy's credit cards?

The scam here isn't the personal use. It's that we bought this cockroach a $80,000 car to begin with.

Just WHAT THE HELL IS IT WITH THESE UN-AMERICAN LEFT-WING SOCIALIST DEMOCRATS OF THE NEGROID PERSUASION?

They are either EXTREMELY stupid/ignorant, or feel they are entitled to do ANYTHING they want (no matter how unethical, immoral, or illegal) without consequences just because they have darkly pigmented skin.

Or... is it BOTH?

"Asked for an explanation, Conyers' Detroit district office responded with a written statement that said "a check was inadvertently written to renew the chairman's driver's license from an account that had been recently closed."

Affirmitive Action employees?
