Congress Wants Ship Missile Defense Plan
Aviation Week and Space Technology ^ | 12/23/2010 | Michael Fabey

Congress wants the U.S. Navy to submit a report by March 31 to show how the service plans to incorporate its ship-based ballistic missile defense requirements with its force structure needs, according to the recently passed defense authorization legislation.

The report should include :

• An analysis of whether the requirement for sea-based missile defense can be accommodated by upgrading Aegis ships that exist as of the date of the report or by procuring additional combatant surface vessels.

• A discussion of whether such sea-based missile defense will require increasing the overall number of combatant surface vessels beyond the requirement of 88 cruisers and destroyers in the Navy’s 313-ship fleet plan.

• A discussion of the process for determining the number of Aegis ships needed by each commander of the combatant commands to fulfill ballistic missile defense requirements, including the number of such ships required to support the “phased, adaptive approach” to ballistic missile defense in Europe.

• A discussion of the impact of Aegis Ashore missile defense deployments, as well as deployment of other elements of the ballistic missile defense system, on Aegis ballistic missile defense ship force structure requirements.

• A discussion of the potential effect of ballistic missile defense operations on the ability of the Navy to meet surface fleet demands in each geographic area and for each mission set.

• An evaluation of how the Aegis ballistic missile defense program can succeed as part of a balanced fleet of adequate size and strength to meet the security needs of the U.S.

I like missile defense but I do not think it has not been tested under real battlefield conditions. We are talking about the use of chaff and penetration aids when the warhead is in flight. Will the missile distinguish between the warhead and the chaff, decoys and penetration aids.A penetration aid is a device or tactic used to increase an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) warhead’s chances of penetrating a target’s defenses.

I understand the report must be given in triplicate: One for the House, One for the Senate, and the third must be translated to Chinese. /s

I think I would rather that they focus on hypersonic anti ship missiles and super fast cavitating torpedoes. It could take billions of dollars to improve the ABM defenses, but it’s not clear how often they would be used nor what type of incremental capabilities they will give the country. However, an aircraft carrier, or any other capital ship, with a hole in it from either a missile or a torpedo, amounts to pretty serious damage, if you ask me.

After we lose a city to a nuclear missile, I’ll ask your opinion then.

But to trader’s point, if the first phase of an attack is to take out the ships, it does little good to have a ship-borne ABM system sitting on the bottom of the sea when phase two is implemented.

The Congress should be focusing on how the military is going to deal with the countless homosexual pervert "discrimination" lawsuits that WILL be coming soon.

Military leaders and commnanders will now have to be walking on egg shells making sure that no pansy soldier feels he's being 'discriminated' against. Look for the dykes to sue the Marine Corp for not allowing them into front line combat. And what will they do when Jack falls in 'love' with Jerome, his barrack's mate, and they shower together? Will this be treated as just two soldiers taking a shower, or two same-sex lovers taking advantage of the military by getting to shower with their honey? How will the other troops take this?

You've go to wonder how many solid, patriotic Christian men will decline from joining the military to avoid being forced to live amongst these creten, STD spreading sodomites that the Bible condemns from cover to cover? How will the military handle Sgt. Tom asking for a month's leave to go home to visit his brand new son, a 5 year old boy just adopted by his "wife" Pvt. Richard. Since Pvt. Richard and Sgt. Tom are both military, do they both get to have maternity leave? Who can determine who's the father and who's the mother?

And what happens when Marine Recruit LeRoy Robinson is standing at attention in his briefs before Drill Sgt. Smith who is explaining the difference between a weapon and a gun, and recruit Robinson is sporting a yardon a hard long because Sgt. Smith's rugged face and muscular body excites his hormones? Then what if Sgt. Smith likes the look of Robinson's woody and makes a date for later on. haha.

What a military we're going to have. It's going to be a joke, an ongoing experiment with sexual deviancy highlited by discrimination law suits, and peppered with lurid news media stories and perpetual "exposes" of the lives of same-sex military lovers, and sob stories about "how difficult it is in the military for gays, in spite of the repeal of Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell".

Our law makers suck, pun intended. If a moral or a value fell from the sky into the middle of a Senate or Congressional session they'd approach it with fear and trepidation, then call in Hazmat to transfer it to NASA for further analysis.

Over the last forty years in America there has been an ominous flushing sound coming from our schools, our media, and our politicians. Now we now what that sound has been as we find our once proud and mighty nation swirling around in the toilet with a great big pile of ............(fill in the blank).

We need both. I sense the purpose of this requested report is to prevent the full development of an ABM shield, because the resources are “needed” for ship defense.

Leaving our cities open to destruction is a prominent part of the liberal catechism.

The DF-21D is loosly based on the Pershing missile thus giving its capability to hit a carrier. The Chinese were floundering in attempts to build effective missiles until the Clinton administration agreed to sell China three Cray supercomputers as part of a trade deal.

After we lose a city to a nuclear missile, I’ll ask your opinion then.

I'm just not to confident of the incremental value of more ABMs on ships. First of all, they have to be located in the correct region and on full alert ready to fire. Also, many AEGIS ships already have ABM capabilities, so we're only talking about an incremental improvement. We also have THAAD and Patriot as well as land-based systems in Alaska. There are versions of airborne lasers which have been tested and validated.

I just don't see the wisdom of adding massive amounts of dollars to a system that already has many workable components and others on the way. We have yet demonstrated the ability to take down hypersonic anti ship missiles or super-cavitating torpedoes. If you hit the AEGIS with any one of these weapons, its ability to defend ABMs goes to zero.
