It was expected, but people who don't follow this stuff probably hadn't realized it yet: The new Census data that just came out today is a huge win for the GOP.
The National Journal describes it as an "embarrassment of riches".
First of all, there was a big shift in Congressional states from "blue" to "red" states. Texas is the huge winner, picking up 4 seats. NY and Pennsylvania both lost seats. California failed to gain any seats for the first time.
Other red states picking up seats, according to Washington Post's Aaron Blake: FL +2, AZ, GA, SC, UT, WA, NV +1.
Other losers included Ohio and Missouri.
What's also key is that the GOP had a monster 2010 election in state legislatures, where the actual of redrawing of districts will occur. So put it together, and you're talking about gains that will last at least a decade felt across all levels of politics.

Dont know what WA is doing in this list.
I wonder if it matters, many seem to vote like dems anyhow.
Dennis Kucinich could lose his seat! Whoo Hoo!

What a dream come true if WA were in it. Maybe they are referring to western Australia?
WA has been and still is gaining population from California migrants. WA has no State Income Tax. Most of the States counties are “Red”, but the big Blue vote comes from the most populous county which is King (Seattle).
When does the reallotment of House seats take place? How soon?
Haha, I always thought Kookcinich was good for comedy relief, with his diminutive, elven appearance.
Good, perhaps we can finally get rid of the heavily gerrymandered John Murtha pork district in Pennsylvania.
The 2010 elections really were a big deal. Much, much longer term ramifications than BO in 2008.
That's my analysis. Your Mileage my vary.
Expect increased liberal calls for abolishment of the electoral college.
Heading is WRONG. It is hoped that it is NOT the GOP that stands to gain, but rather the people of the United States of America. My state, MESS., will lose one seat, currently occupied by an anti-US, pro every one else political hack.
Mass loses, but my country will gain. That’s a good deal Is it “sin” to say it is a Christmas present for the USA?
And those RINO in the Senate will go along with them.
How is this a “win” when they’ll do their damnedest to surrender to the dems?
Ohio will lose two congressional seats, Census Bureau says

Party officials say it’s too early to say exactly which House of Representatives seats are most vulnerable, although they agree the largely Democratic Cleveland area will lose at least one representative, given its population losses.
They say Rep. Marcia Fudge of Warrensville Heights is probably safe because Republicans will want to preserve a district dominated by African-American voters to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act.
Fudge’s district could be expanded west to squeeze out Cleveland Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich. Rep. Betty Sutton’s district could also be sliced up because her territory abuts several other Democrat-controlled districts.
“I don’t have any control over this process, so I’m not going to worry about it,” Kucinich said on Monday.
explain to me how this works; does it all take affect at the next election? I’m in Florida, so let’s say that they redistrict my area. Will I vote for the new person at the next election?
Has to be done before 2012 primaries. Should be done in 2011 State Legislative sessions. Then there will be legal challenges shouting Racism and whatever other reason the trial lawyers can come up with.
Who the F cares? They vote with Hussein anyway.
I think 2000 and 2008 were outliers. I think 2004 is a more accurate portrayal of Presidential elections to come. If I am not mistaken, the GOP just picked up 12 EVs and the Dems lost 12. I will defer FReepers that are much more knowledgeable (like LS), but it seems the road to the White House just got much easier.
