Wow, those were the days, especially here at FR. “Impeachment summer” on Free Republic was like watching a 300-car freight train run into a wall. ...Day after day, hour by hour, one new expose after another. NOBODY covered it like Free Republic.

My family was walking outside Radio City Music Hall in New York City on this day 12 years ago, and it was a brisk December day and I remember looking across the street and seeing one of those scrolling electric banners going around the corner of an office building and it said, “CLINTON IMPEACHED”.

Great reminder post!

I still have a framed copy of the "Clinton Impeached" newspaper hanging above a worn out fax machine and the old 386 PC in a corner of my home office! That particular battle was won... but the War continues.

Lifting a glass to Victory, past, present, and future!

Free Republic organized two rallies in D.C. supporting Clinton's impeachment. The first was a four hour extravaganza that was carried live on C-SPAN and featured the vast right wing conspiracy: Jim Robinson, Rep. Bob Barr, Ann Coulter, Matt Drudge, Lucianne Goldberg, Alan Keyes, Larry Klayman and a host of 5,000 or so fellow conspirators.

We drove down from PA and were there for the first rally where we were introduced to Jim Robinson. We went to the dinner to thank the House Managers at the Hilton. We met Freepers there and spoke with Lucianne and Jonah. It was a huge event, never to be forgotten.

I still have the pins that say:

This girl (Monica Lewinsky) has become the villain in this whole mess, according to the left she’s the one who led poor little innocent, sensitive President Clinton astray. He, on the other hand, has become the “elder statesman” who did nothing wrong. - How about ruining a female subordinate’s life just for starters? - I shall never forget the slouchy Clintons and the wide, destructive wake they trailed behind them everywhere they went. People would do well to remember it when they start thinking that “Hillary wouldn’t be so bad”.

Bubba wears that impeachment mantle like a medal of honor. The guy has absolutely no moral compass. He cannot be shamed.

Ahhh, the day the House voted for something that did absolutely nothing to impede or stall the presidency of Bill Clinton.

Jim Robinson leads Free Republic's Clinton Impeachment Rally, aka March for Justice, Washington, D.C. October 31, 1998

Clinton admits misleading testimony, avoids charges in Lewinsky probe - President's law license suspended for 5 years

It is, therefore, confirmed, codified and certified in history, for all posterity, that December 19th will go down in infamy as the date that a small man, in a high office, who was shamefully reckless and lied about it under oath, destroyed his stain-free presidential legacy forever.

God bless you and thank you forever, Linda Tripp!

Repesentative Bob Livingston blackmailed into resigning on House floor, Dem’s rally against “faithfully executing the law” on WH lawn, the first major internet-only news story...

It’s all (oral-anal) history now.

Free-for-all at Free Republic

Lucianne Goldberg, Matt Drudge and other friends abandon the Clinton-bashing Web site over its attacks on George W. Bush.

###

By Jeff Stein WASHINGTON — Last year, when the sound and fury of the anti-Clinton movement was cresting with every White House revelation, no group reveled more gleefully in the president’s troubles than the habitues of Free Republic, a raucous conservative Web site where Clinton bashers vied to top each others’ harangues and posted press clips bolstering their views.

The “Freepers” turned their cyberspace coffee klatch into the liveliest, if not the biggest, right-wing Web site on the net.

But Free Republic was more than just a Web site where red-meat conservatives could interact, as opposed to merely read.

Freep sponsored anti-Clinton Washington rallies. It took out newspaper ads. It gave a dinner for the congressional managers of the impeachment drive. Freep clubs sprang up in some cities. Lucianne Goldberg, the New York literary agent and catalyst of Monicagate, joined the party, and Web Wunderkind Matt Drudge helped it out with publicity and links.

Free Republic became the main soundstage for the anti-Clinton bandwagon, with its “latest posts” page drawing 50,000 individual visits per day.

What a difference a year makes.

Drudge, Goldberg and several other Free Republic stars have left; visits are reportedly down to less than half what they were a year ago; Free Republic’s founding guru, Jim Robinson, has been sued by the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times; and a swelling number of haters have turned up the volume of death threats, gay-bashing, name-calling and conspiracy theories tying the father of Republican front-runner George W. Bush to drug-dealing by the CIA
