Bogus firehouse drill nets suspensions for 2

But Fire Department response to home remodeling allegation less severe than city recommendation

Ten on-duty Chicago firefighters helped a colleague renovate his home under the guise of a training exercise, but they were spotted by neighbors who knew an abuse of taxpayer resources when they saw one, internal city watchdogs concluded.

The phony drill involved sending a truck and engine from a far Southwest Side firehouse to a nearby home, where firefighters stripped siding from the exterior walls, sources said. Investigators later determined firehouse supervisors — and the firefighter they helped — misled them in an attempt to cover it up.

Inspector General Joseph Ferguson recommended that two fire lieutenants and the home-owning firefighter be suspended without pay for 30 days, the sources said.

But Fire Department brass found the conduct less troubling than the inspector general.

The way I read it was that they were renovating this guy’s house when on duty.

Geez, Take the Apparatus out of it’s district and in broad daylight start working on this Firefighters house, isn’t a really bright idea.

Nothing wrong with doing “Outside work” , most all Firefighters have a second job, but you just cannot leave your box alarm district with two pieces of apparatus and start working on a buddy’s house.

I am amazed that the Union is stupid enough to get involved.

The neighbors who reported these guys will be taken care of shortly by Chicago’s “finest” and other firefighters.

Gee, I wonder if the house was built pre-1978 were any of them certified in the proper containment & disposal of LEAD based paint per the EPA-HUD?

It’s a $32,500.00 fine for each day they worked on the project.
