GOP Senator to Dems: If you try to pass DADT, Republicans won't pass START
Washington Post ^

Posted on 12/17/2010 1:48:09 PM PST by roses of sharon

UPDATE, 4:11 p.m.: In an interview with me just now, Senator Bob Corker doubled down on his contention that if Dems move on DADT, Republicans will be less likely to support START.

"I felt like momentum was growing for START," Corker said, adding that since Reid announced he was holding votes on DADT and DREAM, it has had a "chilling effect."

"I'm watching support for the treaty erode, because of highly partisan political issues being brought up solely because activist groups in the Democratic Party want this done," he continued.

Corker said he wasn't issuing a personal threat, and was merely commenting on the reaction of his Senate GOP colleagues. When I pressed Senator Corker on whether Republican Senators would really base their decision on START on whether Reid held a vote on DADT, Corker didn't answer directly.

"That being thrown into the middle of this debate is causing many Republicans to want to see START pushed back and candidly is causing them to oppose it," Corker said. "This is hardening them against passage of this treaty."

(onyx, on another subject, what do you think of retiring Sen Gregg for Sarah’s VP? From NR today:)

Turning toward his own political future, Gregg said it’s “not likely” that he will run for president in 2012 – though he didn’t foreclose that possibility.

“In New Hampshire we like to have a variety of candidates, so I would seriously doubt that. I expect to be actively involved in the presidential primary. That’s the fun on coming from New Hampshire and being in office,” Gregg said.

“I don’t rule out anything in my future. Let’s face it — that’s not likely and I wouldn’t expect to be doing that,” he added.

Neither DADT NOR START deserve to be passed - this lame duck congress does not have the consent of the governed

That's why Reid is operating in a big hurry like a thief in the night-

Remind me what is the difference in governing philosophy and style between Hugo Chavez and Harry Chavez Reid?

Amazing that they are even trying....usually Rep Senators just lay down and take it.

Do you suppose some of them felt the November earthquake?

They are showing a little more backbone than usual.

I googled "problem with start treaty" - the first on the list was this, penned by Romney last July.

Eight Problems with the New START - Mitt Romney - National Review ... Mitt Romney writes on NRO: My criticism of the New START treaty generated both praise and disparagement. Sen. Richard Lugar’s thoughtful critique of my position deserves ...

Any Repulsican that votes for either will be dealt with appropriately. We’ve had it with this cr*p.

I'm afraid no one sees this as a credible threat anymore. I thought we had it with this crap before but we just had Republicans pass a huge spending and deficit increase bill. First major legislation after the November elections and it's more of the same. I just can't see much progress. Corker sounds like the typical Republican nancy boy. Pathetic. A third Party appears to be more and more the only possible road to restoring our Republic.

How about not passing bills or doing anything for the next 3 weeks, other than cleaning out offices for the next occupants?

How about going home to make cookies with the kids?

Imagine there’s no Congress, lame-ducking us to death.

Well, it is not great...but he is from the NE, which she needs, and well respected by Rs and Ds.

Just a thought, I have not a clue how these things are done, only that a candidate is supposed to try and get a part of the country they don’t already have?

Who knows, just for fun speculation!

I have a hard time believing DADT is causing erosure in the support for START or even DREAM. But then again who knows why the establishment class behaves as they do.

He lost his credentials when he agreed to work in Obama’s administration, short-lived as it were.

Thanks for the ping.

START is a surrender to the Russians. NO DEAL!
DADT repeal to weaken the military. NO DEAL!
DREAM to create more gimmie, socialist, rat voters. NO DEAL!

NO DEAL!

The Democrats can pass any of this stuff they want; they’re in the majority. You’re right, though. They’ve gotta have the few Republicans to give them cover so they can get them to take the blame with the voters next time around. Bipartisanship hasn’t bothered the Dems up till now; so why now?! Or as Obama said, “You Republicans can just ride in the back seat now!” So RIDE and let the Dems bask in the glow.
