Ron Brownstein has a very interesting article out today for National Journal about how the field of candidates is shaping up for 2012. He posits that the field is shaping up to be between managers like Mitt Romney and populists like Sarah Palin.
I think that is, largely, a false dichotomy, but if you change what he means by “manager” I think he is on to something. I’d use a word like “establishment” or even “conventional” to describe the end of the field Brownstein calls “managerial.”
But there is a relevant point here that I think needs to be explored, because I this I think Brownstein hit on something that is going to be exploited, or could be exploited, by someone like Mike Pence and only a select few others.

I like Pence but the other guy mentioned in the article has one huge thing that Pence does not have. That is executive experience and the man I’m speaking of is Haley Barbour. Before this last election, the last person elected from the legislative branch was 50 years ago (Kennedy).
The problem with legislators getting the Presidency is that they have a long laundry list of votes on issues that may not always seem palatable to everyone. Obama bypassed that because he had been in the Senate such a short time.

But I think he’s started off his campaign as a reaction to Obama circa 2009. The problem with that is by the time the primaries are heating up and certainly before the 2012 election, Obama’s impression will have changed into the 2011 version.
My guess is that by 2012, we’ll be clear that we want a candidate with previous executive experience who can show how to move the state of affairs in the right direction. A thinker AND a doer. A congressman can’t show that.
I like Mike Pence a lot. He is a much better speaker than Palin, who I like a lot of what she says, I cant stand how she says it. Broken english and the pitch of her voice is annoying. Pence is calm, measured and has good ideas. I dont know of any negatives, other than someone said he is soft on the border? I need to check on that. That would be a deal killer for me.
Pence is my congressman. I think he is going to run for Governor next year and then run later for President.
You may be right.
Christie/Rubio. That combo would likely deliver Ohio and Florida. If you win both those states, the odds of winning the general election are over 90%.
One may not agree with everything Christie says or does, but he gets the message and it is better than Obama.

I really hope you are correct. That would be the wisest move for Mike Pence. He is a wonderful conservative candidate but he really does need more real executive experience. Running for president after becoming a governor would make him an ideal candidate.
Give Rubio time to show that he really is as conservative as the TEA party that elected him. He makes RINO like noises every once in a while. We here in Florida want to see him live up to our conservative expectations before he goes anywhere else.
