Julian Assange in the Crosshairs ("The truth shall set you free.")
Fox News ^ | December 7, 2010 | Glenn Beck

Posted on 12/17/2010 9:47:31 AM PST by Captain Kirk

Everybody is freaked out about this man. They’re terrified of the mere thought of what secrets he might expose about them on the Internet. The truth shall set you free. But it will make you miserable first. We’re about to hit the misery part.

Many people would rather have slave chains to secrecy than endure the misery required to live in the truth. And so, they will fight, oh, they will fight – which puts Assange straight in the crosshairs. But who is aiming at him?

I want you to come with me and hear this tale. I don’t think anybody has really told the tale of Julian Assange in an explainable way. We’re going to try tonight. Something is not right here.....

I want you to understand, I don’t support this guy. I don’t support what he’s doing, but I’m really torn on this story. He is exposing the fact that our governments all around the world have been lying to us. It’s been a job we’ve been trying to do but been pilloried over and over for doing it.

To his credit, Beck has some misgivings about the motivates of the anti-Wikileaks lynch mob.

Here's one reason I don't have heartburn over this Wikileaks deal:

WikiLeaks reveals a secret deal against Tampa's Odyssey Marine Exploration

In 2007, Tampa based Odyssey Marine Exploration announced an historic discovery - a half billion dollars worth of gold and silver coins on the floor of the North Atlantic. The treasure was brought to the U.S., but Spain immediately claimed ownership sparking a legal battle.

Enter WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange whose massive release of classified documents revealed a secret deal between an American ambassador and Spanish officials.

The Guardian online found a diplomatic cable in which the American suggested he might be able to help Spain repatriate their coins if they would return a rare painting claimed by an American couple in San Diego.

Claude and Beverly Cassirer claim the Camile Pissarro painting “Rue St. Honore” was stolen from their family by the Nazis before it ended up in a Spanish museum. The American diplomat seemed to be suggesting a swap- the painting for the coins.
--------------------------

The Spanish navy accosted Odyssey's ship in International waters, threatening the use of force then boarding and arresting US citizens. They were held in the hot sun with no water or bathroom breaks for 6 hours while the ship was ransacked.

I agree, Assange is a scumbag anarchist but he wouldn’t be able to publish anything that wasn’t given to him. On the other hand, its true that our government has misused secrecy.

That said, I’m not running to either extreme. Charging Assange won’t seal the leaks and exposing legitimate national security secrets would be suicidal.

The handlers of Assange and Manning sought knee jerk reactions and got them from both sides of the aisle.

I think some are scared what he might reveal if he isn’t stopped.

But the same people who are behind him, are the same people who are behind O. So I’m trying to figure out who is goring whose ox. So far I’ve seen confirmation of things I already thought were true, but nothing really surprising.

In any case, the worst secrets have been published over the years on page one of the New York Times; they blew CIA ops one after another during the Bush years. If we were going to prosecute someone, we ought to have started with them.

I’d feel better if we were reading the secrets of Russia, China, Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea...

It seems to me is we ought to be going after the makers of the leaked material. If I see you weaving all over the road an I rat you out to the cops, should I be the ne under condemnation?

"Charging Assange won’t seal the leaks and exposing legitimate national security secrets would be suicidal."

This is why I long for the CIA that existed prior to the neutering it received at the incompetent hands of Stansfield Turner. Had this happened back in the day, Assange wouldn't have heard the sound that killed him. Personally, with Assange's status as a foreign national and a clear and present danger, I wouldn't lose a moments sleep over it.

Manning should have been(and may still be) charged with Art. 106a Espionage, which of course carries with it the possibility of death. Looking at the gallows, Manning would probably have been much more eager to cooperate fully for a reduced sentence.

It's interesting that you mention their "handlers". I'm not entirely convinced that Manning didn't have handlers, unlike some who believe him just to be a distraught homo. He may very well be a distraught homo, but he also enjoys dual British/US citizenship and has many ties to the UK. It would be interesting to know of all Manning's foreign ties. He very well could have been "handled" to do this.

Those that want this info already have it. It’s just the sensationalism of it all that they hate. It exposes the lies that happen on a national level.

But if this private gave all this info to Assange, you know the chicoms and ruskies already have their plants getting the same info as well.

We could easily have charged him with blackmail. When he said he’d release more info if anyone arrests him...that’s flat out blackmail. May not be the big juicy charge everyone wants, but then again Al Capone got busted on tax evasion.

“Julian Assange may not be the man of the year. He may not be the man of the decade or the century. He may actually turn out to be the man of the millennium. Good or bad, because he may be the man that has pushed us off the edge and headed towards profound global change.”

Beck is raising what amounts to a straw dog. World wide government failure will NOT occur if those governments find out what other governments think of them.

I agree. Politicians, like other thieves, are pretty thick skinned about how their counterparts view them. The best chance for governmental failure because of Wikileaks is that the sheeple finally rebel because they are getting facts, unmediated by the MSM and politicians, about the skullduggery and incompetence of their OWN governments.
