Senate Dem leader drops nearly $1.3T spending bill
Washington Post ^ | December 16, 2010

Democrats controlling the Senate have abandoned a 1,924-page catchall spending measure that's laced with homestate pet projects known as earmarks and that would have provided another $158 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nevada Democrat Harry Reid gave up on the nearly $1.3 trillion bill after several Republicans who had been thinking of voting for the bill pulled back their support.

GOP leader Mitch McConnell threw his weight against the bill in recent days, saying it was in his words "unbelievable" that Democrats would try to muscle through in just a few days legislation that usually takes months to debate.

Reid said he would work with McConnell to produce a short-term funding bill to keep the government running into early next year.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The top Senate Republican has offered a one-page bill to prevent a government shutdown on Saturday as an alternative to a 1,924-page catchall spending measure offered by Democrats.

Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell says it's unbelievable that Democrats want to pass the measure in just a few days as Christmas approaches. He says Congress should pass a less costly bill next year - when Republicans will have more leverage.

Wow... am I reading this right? Did Harry Reid just blink?

That’s a major score for Boehner and Company, and a very promising sign. Very promising. Could it be we finally have some Republicans that will stick to their guns?

There aren’t enough Republicans in the Senate to stop anything._____________________________________________

Some republican senators “dropped off in the last few days” had some effect, maybe a 60 vote threshold, with dems falling off here or there. The Republican senators caught an earful for earmarking and for the tax bill goo goo bar to the libs, I know that.

Maybe more of us picked up the dang phone against the tax bill than I suspected, and then turned around today and came back at them on the OmnibusT Bill also. We have to stay on the phones or we’re going down.

I’m not sure I believe this. It will be back in different form next week.

I wouldn't doubt that for a NY minute. Old Harry is sneaky as an egg sucking dog, and he could just be pulling a fast one on the gullible Pubs. Maybe he's trying to get them to relax and then catch 'em off guard in the last hour or so before adjourning. In fact, if I were a betting man I would put a tenner on ole Harry pulling off some kind of dirty trick at the last moment next week.

Even if you're repulsed by the Dems and hate everything they stand for, you have to give them credit for tenacity. One way or another, fair or foul, they usually get what the set out to get. Would to God that our people were that dead set on winning those cat fights.

The Good Lord continues to watch over America.

There are times I question if we deserve it. But apparently he has lots of patience.

The GOP is playing a brilliant game and I’m curious to see how DADT plays out before the end of the term.

From the article:

Reid said he would work with McConnell to produce a short-term funding bill to keep the government running into early next year.

If they stall this, and if it is good enough for the RINOs to not vote for DADT in accordance with their pledge not to pass anything unless the government funding is passed first, then the defeat of repealing DADT could happen.

The logjam for Bush tax cut extension looks like it will pass tonight.

House clears way for vote on tax bill

From Politico:

McConnell Thursday sought to regain his footing by drawing a stark contrast with his one-page “clean” substitute. Left unsaid is that he encouraged the omnibus effort before the election and that, even after Nov. 2, McConnell continued to hedge his bets, never taking out his estimated $112.8 million in spending earmarks, nor pulling back old friends on the Senate Appropriations Committee working on behalf of the measure. He and many other Republicans, who also left their earmarks in the omnibus, are now scrambling to separate themselves from their handiwork. Thursday brought McConnell’s second Claude Rains “Casablanca” moment of the week, when he essentially expressed shock that there’s gambling in Rick’s Café.

I guess Obama didn’t want to sign it. It’s the only reason I can think of why they would drop it. It’s not GOP objections.

Dirty Harry did not blink. Me thinks dropping Porkulus was the trade off for getting DADT, Dream, and START passed.

I wouldn't doubt that for a NY minute. Old Harry is sneaky as an egg sucking dog, and he could just be pulling a fast one on the gullible Pubs. McConnell is crafty, but Reid is craftier and also a crook to boot. Maybe he's trying to get the Pubs to relax and then catch 'em off guard in the last hour or so before adjourning. What will happen is that after the new year, the Democrats will wring there hands and say how the Republicans never play nice and are always throwing up roadblocks, then, the Republicans will turn over and the Democrats will scratch there bellies and they will give them everything the Democrats want. The media will declare how the poor Democrats had such an unfair treatment at the hands of those mean Republicans and how they never play fair, while the Democrats make there rounds saying how we Republicans are racist, uncaring, unwavering rubes who are preventing the oppressed from succeeding. After that, the Republicans will stammer, and trip all over themselves to prove they are not mean only to give into the Democrats demands and allow for them to further destroy this once great nation.

They didn’t have enough votes to pass it. But, now Reid has filed for cloture on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the Dream Act, and the START treaty. These people are like cockroaches!

I will bet the main reason he is dropping it is because some dems have filed to have the entire thing read on the floor and he doesn’t want to waste time so as to cram more of his left wing disaster onto the American people.

Bingo!!!!

That is what I was thinking also!

I think Dingy Harry is still living in the old world where citizens paid no attention to these things during the Christmas Season. That world no longer exists.

Watch Obama’s behavior on Christmas eve. Look for him to sign Executive Orders further damaging America, just as he did last year.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) touts his one-page continuing resolution that would “simply continue the government through February 18th.”

McConnell had earlier quietly backed the effort to produce the nearly $1.3 trillion bill, but he’s now trying to kill it. McConnell also obtained $85 million in so-called earmarks for Kentucky.

Sounds like McConnell got some phone calls! He was 4th from the top in earmarks to begin with!!
