His instinct is to be a socialist. Then, when he’s surprised (surprised!) by the conservative reaction to his socialism he suddenly becomes a CONVERT.

I think he's more commited to being liked. He'll tell anyone what he thinks they want to hear.
I have to admit he is likable and that is his strong suit but when you examine what he has said and done, he's no conservative. He just wants to be nice.
