Yes they were, but do you suppose for one second that they would have granted Natural Born Citizenship to a child born in this country with two foreign citizens parents?
I may have to spell it out for those that believe that anyone born in this country is a Natural Born Citizen but I am sure our Founding Fathers knew exactly what they meant to do when they made that the law of the land.
I'm glad you can admit that at least.
...but do you suppose for one second that they would have granted Natural Born Citizenship to a child born in this country with two foreign citizens parents?"
"granted" is not the right word, but yes. That was their understanding at the time. Birth in the country is enough. That was the way it worked in England for a very long time and the way it continued to work here as colonies, and as an independent nation.
"...I am sure our Founding Fathers knew exactly what they meant to do when they made that the law of the land."
Of course they knew. They were barring naturalized citizens, immigrants, from the Presidency.
Perhaps you'd like to hear what James Madison, "Father of the Constitution" had to say on the subject?
"It is an established maxim that birth is a criterion of allegiance. Birth however derives its force sometimes from place and sometimes from parentage, but in general place is the most certain criterion; it is what applies in the United States; it will therefore be unnecessary to investigate any other.
