What some call “protectionism” I call self preservation. Where would we be if we had relied on German efficiency to produce planes to fight the Japanese in WWII?
I’m fine with global trade but what we have now is globally managed trade that is more about control than it is about money. Plenty of nations have found that they can hinder our war efforts by refusing to produce parts we need or simply jacking up the prices to unreasonable levels.
Some of this is our own fault due to unionism, taxation, and over regulation.

No doubt the union excesses brought some of this on....especially the extreme benefits packages. And the taxation and over-regulation was the final killer
The USA would have been skewered if we had to rely on enemies to build our war materiel. What really hurt the Germans in WW II was that they did not have the oil to run their planes and tanks....and failed in their bid to secure the Soviet oil supplies. Reliance on enemies, present and future, is a sure way to lose a war
