Texas juries sentenced eight convicted killers to death in 2010, the fewest since 1976 in the nation's most active death penalty state.
The figures were released Monday by the Austin-based Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty and were characterized as an "astonishing development" by the group's executive director, Kristin Houle.
Executions also were down in 2010. Seventeen people were put to death, the lowest total since 2001.
Houle told the Houston Chronicle that the figures indicate "Texas and the rest of the country are moving away from the death penalty."
Harris County, which typically leads the nation in death sentences, condemned two people in 2010.

What the heck, Texas, we’re slipping.
Hopefully they are all liberals. Of course one could safely assume that.
are = were
Maybe Texas is running out of criminals.
Raw numbers are one thing but I’d like to know the percentage when applied to the opportunity for the death penalty.
I blame the economy. Have you seen the costs of lethal injection drugs these days. On the other hand, rope is cheap and can be recycled.
Naw, there are plenty serving time on death row. It takes a long time to process them through all the appeals etc.

“Texas and the rest of the country are moving away from the death penalty.”
____________________________________________________________________________
I highly doubt that with a Republican super majority in the Texas state house, Texas is going to quit executing people.
Maybe the practice is having the desired effect and making perps think twice before killing.
That list is pathetic........
Yup. "If you kill someone in Texas, we'll kiil you back." I think this comment was made by commedian Ron White.
Houle told the Houston Chronicle that the figures indicate “Texas and the rest of the country are moving away from the death penalty
Now there is a person not in touch with reality..
Heck....*SALUTE*
Texas, Has an "Express Lane to Hell" for these Felons.
as compared w/ other states/countries.
Yes, it was White. "It's our policy."
I love Ron “Tater Salad” White.
“yep. You caught him. You caught the tater”
“I wasn’t drunk in public. They threw me IN PUBLIC”
“Other states are trying to abolish the death penalty. My state’s putting in an express lane.”
Looks like the total executions is out of order. For instance why is Florida (69) behind Missouri (67) or North Carolina (43) ahead of Alabama (49) and Georgia (48)?
At any rate, given the size and population of Texas (since it be it’s own country if they wanted to) it’s really a small number. If you are a criminal thug, then it’s probably advisable not to live in Oklahoma or Florida.
Shocked at how low California is given the size and population.
So I guess the bottom line is did crime drop or go up since 2000? Moreover, what about the percentage of people incarcerated? I would be interested to know those stats after looking at this chart.
“Shocked at how low California is given the size and population.”
California is run by hippies and is Movieland Liberal Central. That is why they are so low.
