Speaker of the House and other house officials are chosen by the Republican members of the House, in party caucus. There may or may not be a floor ceremony, but the real work is done behind closed doors.

Seniority is very important. Normally, whoever has seniority gets the job, unless they have been caught up in a really MAJOR scandal. Apparently killing American light bulbs is not considered a problem for leading the energy committee, and being the King of Pork is not a problem for leading the Pork Committee.

Problem is, we still don’t have an absolute majority of Tea Party folks in congress. And many or most of them are junior, so they don’t qualify for business as usual appointments.

We have to keep the pressure on, and if necessary throw a lot more of these guys out in 2012. Either that, or start a new party, as Sarah has said. Either the Republicans see the light, or they will simply have to be replaced, not by some third party but by a new, majority second party that takes their place.

Less than two years to see which way it goes. Reformed GOP, or dead GOP? We cannot wait any longer.
