Backscatter X-Ray Machines Easily Fooled
Slashdot ^ | 12/11/10 | Soulskill

Posted on 12/11/2010 11:29:53 AM PST by Clint Williams

Pinckney writes

"A paper by Leon Kaufman and Joseph W. Carlson in the Journal of Transportation Security asserts that x-ray backscatter machines are not very effective (PDF) even in their intended role. While carelessly placed contraband will be detected, the machines have glaring blind-spots and have difficulty distinguishing explosives from human tissue. As they write, 'It is very likely that a large (15–20 cm in diameter), irregularly-shaped, cm-thick pancake [of PETN explosive] with beveled edges, taped to the abdomen, would be invisible to this technology. ... It is also easy to see that an object such as a wire or a boxcutter blade, taped to the side of the body, or even a small gun in the same location, will be invisible.'"

But don't worry. Your Rulers say it will make you safer.

I wonder how a woman with early pregnancy feels when being x-rayed. She should consult her doctor before stepping in front of that machine.

It is not like they are LOOKING FOR THE PERPS.

They are collecting nakid pics of children and good looking
womyn for TSA while maxmizing the likelihood of future
induced carcinomas and sarcomas and transmitting of STDs
to the helpless (infirmed, pregnant women, elderly, kids)
while agreeing —from the getgo— to let Moslems
and now Mexicans (including Hezballah from Iran)
right through. How convenient of the them.

Please tell all our enemies how to defeat this technology.

So, let’s see. Our “bunny with the pancake on its head” would not be detected in their machines?

“I refuse to fly.”

Us, too. A few years ago, when we flew to and from New York City; when we landed, I asked my husband, “Please, unless it is an absolutely huge emergency, let’s agree that we won’t fly again anywhere that we can drive!” He agreed. So far, so good. I’ve had some pretty hairy experiences flying even before all this terrorist stuff started. - It’s not normal to begin with, and getting worse.

You can bet the bad guys are circulating this info as we speak. I’m no fan of the backscatter machines.....but whoever let this cat out of the bag should be...........well, if a plane goes down because PETN got through with this technique...shot!

It would seem that both the right and the left agree that the TSA and all this security theatre are a joke, and a waste of money.

On 9/11, airlines learned to reinforce cockpit doors, and the public learned to stand and fight. That should have been the end of it.

With so few issues that right and left agree on, it’d be nice to see everyone working together to get this abolished.

Other than chaperoning a teen group a couple years ago, I hadn’t flown in about 20 years. It’s just too much of a hassle. Even though our group had chartered a plane (The Saints had just been on it), we still had to go through all the take your shoes off and everything. Geez, it was just us on the plane! It was families or you knew each other forever. On the flight out’s landing, hubby and another guy were counting the markers and we weren’t slowing down. On the return flight, there was bad weather and the idiot attendants woke the kids to play games to distract them from being tossed around. It was after midnight and the kids were exhausted from their trip so most were sleeping through the storm. That landing was so bad that I’m sure the pilot had to change his pants.

Just curious -

Why would you not include even one logical keyword?

This is pretty specific info where there is no need to reveal it...."beveled edges"!!

We're pushing our luck by letting stuff like this out!

LOL, you win the cigar!

I couldn't stand being a screener after awhile, think of all the nasty bodies you have to look at 24/7. They will all be signing up for PTSD and disability retirements.

Something I don't get. The only passive screener that is fool-proof is an infrared scanner. I have used one, amazing.

Anything that blocks body heat shows clear and crispy. I could easily tell a 5.56 from 7.62 round at 20 feet, in the dark, in a pocket, and see which one was pointing up or down. Totally non-invasive, although male appendages do stand out, so to speak :):).

The scanner could be adjusted to show 2 colors, all you are looking for is any layer or object that blocks body heat.

What does the TSA do about arm or leg casts for broken bones?

They could easily conceal PETN inside.

How would the TSA know if they were legitimate casts?
