The number of bears killed in the New Jersey bear hunt climbed to 386 by the close of check stations Tuesday, the second day of the hunt. The new number was reported Wednesday morning by the state Division of Fish and Wildlife. Hunters brought in 264 bear to check stations Monday and 122 by 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The total number of bear killed in the first two days was more than the entire duration of the last two bear hunts in 2003 and 2005.

State officials expect that 500 to 700 bears will be killed by the time the six-day hunt is over, said Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Larry Ragonese. “The hunt is pretty much on target right now,” he said. Rod Gordon of West Milford with a bear he shot and is ready to weigh at the check-in station during the first day of the hunt Monday. Of the bears killed, one was taken in violation of state law, Ragonese said.

On Monday, a 17-year-old shot a 150-pound bear near his family’s land on October Hill Road in Jefferson, where they are building a home. The teenager had a hunting license and a bear permit, but he was too close to private residences when he shot the bear. He was within 250 feet of two homes, instead of being in the required 450-foot safety zone.

After getting calls about shots fired, a conservation officer went to the home and discovered the violation. The teenager could get a written warning, or face revocation or suspension of his hunting license, Ragonese said.

Got my neighbors dog a couple years ago. Got my kitchen window. Got into my neighbors fridge on the main floor of their house. Got my "bear proof" can a few times. I say Yogi can take a hike.
