South Korea military to visit Taiwanese island

TAIPEI: South Korea's military is to visit a Taiwan-held islet heavily bombed by China during the Cold War, hoping to learn valuable lessons following an attack by North Korea, Taiwan media said Wednesday.
South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak has instructed relevant military units to form a delegation to visit Taiwan's Kinmen island in the wake of last month's deadly bombardment on Yeonpyeong island, said the United Evening News.
The delegation is scheduled to arrive on December 20, the report said, citing unnamed sources.
"We can learn from each other's experiences," said Taiwan's Vice Defence Minister Chaou Shih-chang, although he declined to comment specifically on the reported visit, citing a policy of no-comment on military diplomacy.

Would be a good development, if it hadn’t been canceled.

I think it’s a major mistake for South Korea to emulate Taiwan. Taiwan is essentially forced into a purely defensive stance with regards to China. I don’t think South Korea should adopt that attitude; instead they should response measure for measure to North Korean aggression.
To use an analogy, if you are being bullied, what is more likely to end the bullying? Trying to hide your lunch money in your shoes so the bully can’t get it so easily, or learning to fight and putting the bully in a world of hurt?
