Put that in your pipe you left-wing kooks, hockey commentator Don Cherry told a shocked inaugural meeting of the new city council, blasting left-wing pinkos.
Cherry was Mayor Rob Fords pick for a special guest for the pomp-filled ceremony. Cherry turned up in a pink-and-white silk jacket and patterned tie that was eye-popping even for the famously flamboyant TV star.
The co-host of Hockey Night in Canadas Coachs Corner put the chain of office around Fords neck something normally done by the city clerk and then sat stoically, clapping as each of the 44 councillors got their ceremonial oaths of offices and posed for photos with Ford.
While Cherry is famously outspoken few, it seemed, were ready for the three-minute blast he delivered after being asked to make some remarks.
Im wearing pinko for all the pinkos out there that ride bicycles and everything, I thought Id get it in, Cherry said to a sharp intake of breath, then laughs and some claps.
Whatd ya expect, Ron MacLean here, to come here?, he said, referring to his buttoned-down foil on Coachs Corner.
Cherry, a Ford supporter who had not met the new mayor until Tuesdays event, said he was befuddled by criticism of Fords choice of him.
Im being ripped to shreds by the left-wing pinko newspapers out there its unbelievable. One guy called me a jerk in a pink suit so I thought Id wear that for him too today, Cherry said.

LOL Awesome :)
One of my favorite books is George Plimpton's "Open Net" in which Plimpton trains with the Boston Bruins in 1977, of which Cherry was coaching at the time. Cherry offers many many 'colorful' stories about his hockey career, such as when he was playing minor league under coach Eddie Shore .. Shore would sarcastically refer to him as - "Mister Cherry, the Madagascar Kid" - of which Cherry had no clue what that meant, and Shore wasn't the kinda guy you would dare to question ....
Good to know that Don Cherry is on our side ..
I like it. We need more of this.
