Berkeley residents will be among the first in the country to get access to an hour-long radio news show produced by the Al Jazeera network.
The Pacifica Foundation announced on Monday that it would run the radio broadcasts on three of its stations KPFA in Berkeley, WBAI in New York and WPFW in Washington DC.
The show was broadcast today in Berkeley, will start on Tuesday in the other cities and will be expanded to the other Pacifica outlets, including Los Angeles in January. Eventually, all 150 of Pacificas affiliates will have access to the radio shows.
Al Jazeera Englishs news and programming is an exciting addition to our current line-up of thought-provoking programming, Arlene Englehardt, Pacifica Foundations executive director announced in a press release. It is part of our mission at Pacifica to act as a bridge between cultures and to present stories that are too often overlooked by other media in the United States.
The program will air from 6 am to 7 am on weekdays, pushing Democracy Now with Amy Goodman to 7 am.
While Al Jazeera has an extensive radio and television production company, with 65 bureaus around the world and 1,000 staff members, it has not successfully penetrated the U.S. market. Since Al Jazeera regularly broadcasts videos and other missives from Al Qaeda, some regard it suspiciously. Until today, its radio shows were only available through satellite subscriptions.
Englehardt said Pacifica has been in talks with Al Jazzera for about a year, but the discussions intensified in February. She would not reveal the financial terms of the agreement but said Pacifica would not lose money on the transaction.
We think it is a good news program that offers a slightly different perspective that the U.S. media, said Englehardt. They tend to cover international news but they also cover events in the United States.
Englehardt said she was particularly impressed with Al Jazeeras coverage of the disaster in the gulf caused by the explosion of a British Petroleum oil well.
Pacifica and staff members of KPFA have been embroiled in a contentious dispute over staffing and budgets in recent weeks. Disgruntled employees and volunteers have held numerous rallies outside Pacificas headquarters on Martin Luther King Way to protest changes Englehardt made to the station.
One of those was to pull the popular Morning Show and lay off its hosts. Englehardt said the show will return in a new hour-long format this week or next, before KPFAs next fundraising drive. KPFA will announce the new host of the show soon, she said.
... it wasn’t RED DAWN that the movie should have been about...
I guess that they don't get Comcast Cable since it's been on my tv for quite some time!?
Pacifica gets tax dollars from the CPB and most of that goes to its far leftwing foundation. Isn’t the Boulder station run by leftist volunteers?
Whats the bet they forget to count these anti-Americans when the fairness doctrine II comes down.
No one will notice a difference from its regular programming.
I’ve listened to KPFA (Berkeley) and their Houston sister-station KPFT ... seditious radio to the core. They make Air America (rest in peace) seem patriotic.
Al Jazeera will likely serve to moderate the Pacifica network slightly.

When I lived in the bay when i had a delivery job I would switch it on once and a while and about puke.. During desert storm they were out right treasonous.. Then a Radio station that has Mumia doing comentary, I was really sick to my stomach.. They call for Revolution, well I think it is coming and they are not going to like the outcome..
Rush Limbaugh comes to Al Majd radio station,
Mecca, Saudi Arabia, airwaves
Meanwhile, the dim-bulb-crats want to shut down Fox.
Such is life in the time of idiots.
I live in Houston (where KPFT broadcasts). I actually listen a time or two a week (I apparently have a strong stomach). It is, if nothing else, educational to listen to unapoligetically anti-American radio.
Mumia still has his “radio commentary” from death row. It airs alongside any and every two-bit marxist hack they can find ... including a “Nation of Islam” show, the “420 Drug War News”, and a Militant Vegan/Animal Rights show.
The whole network has no production value at all — dead air, dropped calls, etc. — and spends the better part of two to three months a year doing “fund drives”.
“Democracy Now” with Amy Goodman is the flagship show ... a leftist (in the most extreme sense of the term) “news hour”. She is a marxist, pro-terrorist, anti-American, anti-western, anti-capitalist, environmentalist “journalist”.
It is educational insofar as it shows how (or if) the enemy is thinking.

Maybe Ed Schultz can get his show on all the Al Jazeera stations. There’s gotta be someone who will listen.
HAHAHAHA!! Instead of listening to our propaganda, they’ll be listening to their propaganda.
Silly leftists...
