FDR went to War against Germany and Italy - did they attack the USA? Were they threatening us with WMD?

The lesson of Pearl Harbor is this: if you declare war, you have to fight with everything you've got and achieve total victory over the enemy's ideology.

If you fart around for a decade, never naming the enemy or taking the war to his homeland, you would be better off never to have gone to war in the first place.

Ask the Russians.

Unlike in the era of Teddy Roosevelt, the US economy, way of life, and national security today depend on access to raw materials, finished goods, markets, and credit from all across the globe. Isolationism is not a plausible national strategy today.

Indeed, with the world's largest economy and most potent military, the US is the preferred ally of almost every nation and the guarantor of peace and freedom for every developed nation. Even when we are criticized, it is because we are essential to the world's peace and orderly progress.

Contrary to common belief, we are likely to remain the world's only superpower for decades to come. China will soon suffer economic, demographic, and political dislocations that will dramatically limit her aspirations. Even the Muslim insurgency is likely to begin to fade within five to ten years as Islam adapts to modernity. Iran is already ripe for a pro-Western, pro-US revolution.

Of course, with the wrong national leadership and the wrong decisions, we could suffer a precipitous fall. But who would truly wish that except our enemies?

The real lesson of Pearl Harbor is to never let your guard down, especially when your pulling raw materials from other countries.

In 1853, U.S. Navy warships entered the North Pacific with the largest show of naval power the area had ever seen. ~~~
The Navy’s goal in 1853 was to make Japan into what a Japanese prime minister later called “America’s unsinkable aircraft carrier in the Pacific”
Which shows incredible prescience by the USN. (in 1853 they didn't yet operate aircraft)

The lesson is that we should make ourselves weaker, meaning presumably that Japan attacked us because they thought we were too strong to beat?
