WikiLeaks: British Police Arrest Assange
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been arrested by British police over sexual assault claims in Sweden, according to Sky sources.
A fresh European arrest warrant has been received by Mr Assange's lawyer - as anger grows in the US over the latest leaked embassy cables by the whistleblowing website.
Sky sources have said officers from Scotland Yard detained the 39-year-old Australian at around 9.30am. Labelling the move as a "political stunt", Mr Assange's solicitor Mark Stephens said his client wants to find out what allegations he faces so he can clear his name.
Two women in Sweden have claimed they were sexually attacked when Mr Assange visited the country in August. He denies the claims.
Sky News' Rhiannon Mills said: "Authorities in the UK are involved because it is believed Julian Assange has been living in the south east of England.
"They are now obliged to detain or arrest him."

That's what I was thinking too, Hacksaw. Hopefully British authorities will hold him awhile.
Unfortunately Assange has a throng of angry followers who in the past few days have launched a "payback" campaign of revenge through DDOS attacks. It is not going to be pretty.

Got plenty of popcorn here. The problem with negotiating with any kind of criminal is that they're criminal first. Anyone who would believe anything a criminal will or will not do is not making wise decisions.
Governments have already taken some big hits with the introductory releases.
Arresting Assange shows that they're willing to risk the release of more classified documents.
Either way they did Assange a huge favor because now no one can harm Assange and he will have his chance to be heard in a court of law.
Nothing happens when he gives out secrets that endanger our troops, but let him release how obeyme manipulated climate accord and used spying, threats and promises of aid to get support for Copenhagen accord and all of a sudden he gets arrested. I wonder.

While it would have been preferable for none of the leaks to come out, especially if they truly damage US interests, they have certainly shown that the emperors are without clothes.
Blackmail only works if you don't release the material. Once it is out, he loses all leverage.
I was hoping this would happen. Let all of his poison out and let the chips fall where they may. Now, lets see if his co-conspirators are dumb enough to bring the world of hurt down on themselves that releasing their “secrets” gets them.

More likely scenario would be strategic releases to create leverage at weak points such as just releasing tidbits of info from the Brits since they are the ones holding him.

MNo, once the “pill”has been released, he and his co-conspirators no longer have any power, and if you think their actions will all be forgiven and forgotten after a trial....think again, what kind of people are being damaged by these releases of secrets.
Tnere will be no mercy, no quarter, no sympathy for Assange and those who are stupidly arrogant enough to aid and abet him. They will all be hunted down.
Assange is just the tip of the iceberg. Unlike what Baghdad Bob Gibbs leads one to believe, Wikileaks is not just “one guy with a keyboard and a laptop.”
When are they going to hunt down the N Y Times? (another indiscriminate disseminator of vital secrets)

Washington — Secretive governments may have met their nemesis.
A new online effort called Wikileaks seeks not only to archive hot tips and documents that reveal government corruption and questionable policies, but also to encourage them.
Asserting that leaking government information is the “most cost-effective means of promoting good government” around the world, Wikileaks is seeking any and all leaks.
Taking a page from the Wikipedia online encyclopedia, an information respository and exchange maintained by its users, Wikileaks promises to be a vehicle for “untraceable mass document leaking and analysis,” according to its Web site. The focus is on releasing information in places not known for heralding the public’s right to know: China, Russia, Africa and the Middle East.
“But we also expect to be of assistance to those in the West who wish to reveal unethical behavior of their own governments and corporations,” the site states.
The need for a site where people can post information about government corruption without fear of reprisal is apparent, said Sue Dreyfus, an advisory board member. The site has not yet listed other board members, but it says it was founded and partly funded by dissidents, mathematicians and technologists across the globe.
