Live Thread: Obama Statement on His Caving on Extending Bush Tax Rates (Apprx. 6 p.m. EST 12/06/10)

Obama will be speaking to the nation shortly to put the best spin on his caving in to the Republicans on extending the Bush tax rates. The cable networks are standing by to cover it live.

Here's a teaser from CNN on the deal:

President Barack Obama presented congressional Democratic leaders Monday with a proposed deal with Republicans that would extend Bush-era tax cuts for two years and unemployment benefits for 13 months while also setting the estate tax at 35% for two years on inheritances worth more than $5 million, a senior Democratic source told CNN.

The deal also includes a temporary 2% reduction in the payroll tax to replace Obama's "making work pay" tax credit from the 2009 economic stimulus package for lower-income Americans, the senior Democratic source said. As currently crafted, the deal would prohibit amendments by either party, according to the source, who spoke on condition of not being identified by name.

According to the senior Democratic source, Obama and Biden told the congressional Democrats that the proposed deal was the best they could expect.

Jonathan Goldberg just said on Bret’s show that Obama sounded “shockingly angry” at Republicans for striking a deal. (Or making him strike one.)

Perhaps I am taking this different than many, but I just watched this speech.

This corrupt bastard was in full attack mode against the Republicans. It was disgusting... every damn word of it. If only I could have reached through the tv screen......

I damn well better see a hard hitting Republican response to this.

Obama is one very angry man... that part I liked.

The only positive on this is that it helps grow the general outcry and maybe even will bring back something socially helpful — stigma.

Everyone knows more than two years is getting surreal.

ROTFL!!!

They have no one to blame but themselves. They were the ones who overplayed the race card and turned it into a yawner. It doesn't scare Americans anymore.

So are the UI extensions a 13 month extension of the current up to 99 weeks of benefits, or an increase from 99 weeks to 99 weeks + 13 months?

Jonah Goldberg said he wonders who will be the first Dem. to question O’s birth certificate. Stunning.

Did anyone just catch the statement Jonathan Goldberg made on FOX saying the RATS are livid and one tweeted him asking ho would be the first DEM to openly question Bambi’s birth certificate?

Little nugget for all you birthers!

Unemployment insurance in itself increases the unemployment. Incentive for the unemployed worker to find a job or take a job with lesser pay is reduced.

Bottom line.............Obama came out ahead on this deal.

And it it Pizzes me off.

Question: Is it 13 weeks or 13 months for unemployment extension?
If it is 13 months, this is insane.

He has zero grace. The tone of this “speech” was an insult to the American people.

You're right, dennisw, and like you said, he was in a hurry during his speech. His tone sucked. He's a very poor loser and worse than a national disgrace: he takes it the world stage.

The punk is truly no more than a community organizer (agitator).

I honestly don’t know. Bret just said they are posting the framework of the compromise.
Oops, just as I typed that, here is Greta’s tweet:
