Don Meredith, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback who served as a folksy foil for Howard Cosell on ABC's ''Monday Night Football'' and helped carve out the niche for colorful ex-athlete broadcasters, has died. ''Dandy Don,'' as he was known, was 72.
Meredith's wife, Susan, told The Associated Press her husband died Sunday in Santa Fe after suffering a brain hemorrhage and lapsing into a coma. She and her daughter were at Meredith's side when he died.
''He was the best there was,'' she said Monday, describing him as kind, warm and funny. ''We lost a good one.''

When Dan Fouts was being bashed backwards by a defender, he completed an unbelievable pass to Chuck Muncie, who caught it in perfect stride and ran for a first down.
You could sense Meredith’s appreciation of that pass by emphasizing “Just a shade shy of perfect.” Meredith loved to announce games that Fouts played in.
You just know he’s annoying the hell out of Howard Cosell somewhere...
RIP Dandy Don
Every one seemed to do a Howard impression. Can’t remember anyone doing a Meredith impression. Guess he was inimitable.
RIP Don Meredith. A great football player and one heckuva entertaining sportscaster. He will be missed
On playing for Tom Landry: “He’s such a perfectionist that if he were married to Dolly Parton he’d expect her to cook.”
His comment when Vice President Spiro Agnew visited the Monday Night booth: “I didn’t vote for you, but you do have a nice suit on.”
Meredith- “If ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ were candy and nuts, wouldn’t it be a merry Christmas?”
On teammate Walt Garrison: “If you needed four yards, you’d give the ball to Garrison and he’d get you four yards. If you needed 20 yards, you’d give the ball to Garrison and he’d get you four yards.”
Meredith, Cosell, and Griffin. Greatest MNF team ever.

Amen! My beloved Mother is 92. When I visit she doesn’t even know me. ... But I know who she is so I keep visiting when I’m able. In fairness to her though, she was completely there just five years ago. Folks in my families tend ot live a long time. The last three years have been anything but worthwhile for Mom, but she used to say she was going to live to be 100. By golly, she just might do it, even though she won’t know she’s there!
He also called a play that was unique. He took the ball from center and junped into the air and threw an honest to God basketball chest pass. It was completed for two yards bu the tight end who caught it on the run and advanced for more that 20 yards.
The team followed hin because he was a great leader.!
Here’s Lady Bird Johnson not long before her death:

Totally blind and confined to a wheelchair. I don’t think I’d want to live into my 90s if I had to end up like that.
Man, sad to hear Dandy Don passing.
During the Meredith, Garrison hayday them was some damn good Cowboys. After those guys retired and Landry finally gave it up, it was the end of the Cowboys!
Well, we did sing the song with a Dandy Dan accent.
