For Federal Employees, a Feeling of Being Targets in the Budget Wars
New York Times ^ | December 5, 2010 | Ashley Parker

WASHINGTON — Iyauta Moore may be many things — a single mother raised by a single mother in the South Bronx, a 34-year-old woman with a master’s degree in public administration from American University, a top-level government employee who makes a little over $100,000 a year — but she bristles at the notion that she is just another overpaid, underworked, cosseted bureaucrat.

“What I do here involves creating something that doesn’t exist,” she said of her job at the Department of Education, where she is establishing a group to help oversee all of the department’s grants. “That’s not pushing paper.”

Ms. Moore, who is a member of the American Federation of Government Employees, added: “We’re out and we’re making a difference in the community. And I don’t really think you can put a dollar figure on that.”

But as politicians intent on cutting the federal budget try to do just that, career government employees are feeling besieged.

but I’m heartened by how many FReepers feel the same way I do.

Really? There's like 2 on each of these pro-Fed threads.

But that's so typical of Federal-types...to take the data and skew it.

You are like all the other DC types. There are some federal positions, obviously, that are needed but you people don't think straight.

“To: Poundstone I agree with you 100%..as a 30+ year Fed Employee, I am tired of hearing the stereotypical “bad, bad, fed employee” going around.

LOL.

Two ticks agree on the unfair press they are given in Dog Times.

If you want more people who agree with you, go over to DU. It's half welfare cases of one sort or another, and the other half is government employees. But I repeat myself.

Ok, so alot of Fed Emps are overpaid, that goes without saying. That said, I knew a few, who were fairly high up, that were severely underpaid. They worked 12 - 14 hour days and made far less than an equivalent private sector employee. These folks worked that way because they believed in their jobs and what they were doing (Department of veterans affairs, former military guys). Bless those people. One of them even got called up and served in Afghanistan and then Iraq, where he nearly got killed and got disabled. That guy is my hero.

I know, perhaps exceptions to the rule, but just sayin...

A real conservative would dismantle the Department of education and do away with it. They’ve never educated a child yet. The department of education is not a constitutionally authorized government function.

Government controlled schools are responsible for where we are now. Enough stupid voters that look to government as parents and believed a communist selling hope and change snake oil. Citizens incapable of being citizens is what the statists have raised and you seem proud of it.

You and your support of all things government makes me think you are secretly ashamed at what you have taken during your career. Why in the hell you hang out at FreeRepublic when you are living a lie puzzles me.

If your federal career involved serving in the military, I give you a pass. If you have pushed paper and have now retired on my dime you have my condemnation for trying to justify your worthless career. Maybe if you haven’t been such a self rightous ass, I wouldn’t be so irritated. I would have left this alone.

Your post is a lot better than mine. You fleshed out her likely career path from womb to tomb with a fat Federal .Edu job in between. An imbecile with very high self esteem. See her smug smile? How pleased she is with herself?

Lance Hamann, 40, works as a purchasing agent for the Department of Agriculture at a vocational jobs center in Puxico, Mo. His salary is a bit more than $40,000. He is the president of Local 1840 of the federal employees federation.

He says he is happy where he is professionally, with a decent paying job in the town where he grew up.

“I don’t necessarily want to move up the ladder, per se, and accept the additional responsibilities,” he said, “even though that may come with additional pay.”

In other words, Lance is happy to just take up space, milk the treasury and retire with a fat pension.

I missed where he said he agrees with you on the six figure retirement payouts for EPA Powerpoint jockeys, and 30 year veteran Post Office OSHA trainers.

MOST domestic economic and social issues for Flyover Country would improve substantially with a return to Constitutional Federal government. Hence the Rinocratic Oligarchy’s Palinophobia.

the DC Metro area would take on the chin....and most of the attorneys on the Boston-New York-DC hyper-regulatory shuttle would be reduced to ambulance chasing.

The rest of the world would be treated to the sight of American ingenuity unshackled-

Maybe she can help some of the inquiring minds here on FR understand exactly what of Federal importance is served the 50 states by DEA grant-making-and why any taxpayer should be interested in-or fund yet another committee to be involved with it?

For some reason I doubt there exists a Constitutional, or even a cogent, logical explanation.

Thanks for the great job you do with the Marines. You know as well as I that State is a preserve for parasitical_cannot_be_fired careerist lefties, Israel haters and homos. I’m glad you were able to do a good job there despite that all. Stories abound about how unhelpful American embassy people are when you get into trouble abroad

State is so leftist that they were leaking and sabotaging Colin Powell. He wasn’t black enough or liberal enough for the cannot_be_fired permanent liberal bureaucracy.
