It is not reasonable to assume that there were any ships that saw it, but there could have been. If there were, the liklihood that they would have reported anything to anyone but their log is about 5%.
Implicit in your assumption is that mariners and passengers are an insular, uninformed, uncurious and untalkative group of people.
