The first of these [things about politics I don't understand] is the utility of relying on political consultants. I am sure there must be some good ones, but I seem never to have met them. The ones I have met seem to be largely glad-handlers, purveyors of conventional pieties, people who make a fair hunk of change getting others to work, and people who are not terribly smart operators except at self-promotion.

Before Reagan was an icon--in fact just months before he was elected president--he was treated by the media and "moderates" in his party as an extremist and a dunce.

This is not new. The un-original, alinsky-doting leftists say the same things about every Conservative...it's their drone, it's their talking points, it's their narrow-minded, one size fits all approach to competition.
The left knows that no one will vountarily accept their premise of government, so without any desirable attributes of their own, their only option is to destroy their opponent based on lies and innuendo. Most of the time it has worked, but it's impact is waning.
If you did a lexus-nexus search I'm sure you'll find similar things said about the Bushs, and any other conservative opponent of the left.
The left changed to that line after the monikers of "stinky" and "do-do head" stopped working for them.
