Senate Defeats Democrat Attempt To Extend Middle-Class Tax Cuts
By COREY BOLES
WASHINGTONThe U.S. Senate on Saturday defeated a move by Democrats to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the middle classes permanently, in a rare weekend vote that likely had little effect on wider negotiations to reach a compromise on how to extend the tax cuts.
The Senate voted 53-36 to reject an attempt to initiate debate in the chamber on a measure that would have extended lower tax rates for individuals who earn less than $200,000 and couples earning less than $250,000.
Under Senate rules, the motion would have required 60 votes to formally bring the legislation to the floor.

Funny how that number just continues to creep lower isn’t it?
LLS
Pretty hard to cheer about that actually.
I guess that 53 number means about 11 dims joined the pubbies?
10 Senators did not vote?
Looks like the Kerry plan is up next. We’ll see how that one fares.
Clare McCaskell (D-MO) was on TV this morning accusing Republicans of being for the milllionaires and billionaires instead of the middle class, echoing that pile, Sen. Chas. Schumer (D-NY).
You conservatives from the Show Me state need to be finding a terrific conservative to run against her in 2012. She’s the Dem equivalent to that GOP witch Murkowski from AK with her entitlement attitude.
The tax cuts should be extended for the sake of job creation. Those who run and own the businesses are those who hire people to work. It really is that simple. I do anticipate the ‘press idiots’ are going to attempt a ‘class warfare situation’ to continue to try and confuse the public. This could get ugly fast. More prayer up for our nation. May our nation’s People’s eyes be opened. Give our leaders the words to help the people who are listening, understanding of the reason, tax cuts must be extended for all. Tax cuts will make a recovery possible.
My allowance thru my wife's income preservation bill?
I don’t get it. I thought that the Bush tax cuts were for ONLY the rich. Now I learned that there actually were tax cuts for the middle class.
Why I had no idea!!!!!!!
The poverty level for a family of 4 (usually an oxymoron) is a cool 40k a year. They must start paying taxes!! I love consumption taxes like Gas taxes because they HAVE to pay!I’m sick of pulling their wagon. They can pay!!
“I guess that 53 number means about 11 dims joined the pubbies?”
Not necessarily! The dimbulbs can always count on Lugar and a handful of other RINO’s to vote with them.
i know it is hard to cheer but its good they didnt compromise with these fools. Im hoping obama’s sense of wanting to get re-elected will give him a zero hour ability to compromise and just extend the whole thing. But then again I have some ice in hell to sell you also.
Not really. The liberal, progressive democrats have only two cards to play.
One is the RACE card and this was a non-starter with this vote.
Two is the Class Warfare card and they have been playing it for years and years.
Enough. We are all equal; black/white, rich/poor/ successful/unsuccessful.
It's time to uphold the Declaration of Independence; the part where "all men are created equal".
Trying to get Jim Talent to run again. If not there is a formaer state treasurer that will step up.
President Reagan was correct when he said, Government is the problem. President Reagan tried, his truth lives on, thus President Reagan did not fail in spreading the truth. Hopefully we will have someone like President Reagan soon. Real Soon.
HEADS UP!
Behind the scenes, the negotiation for tax cuts is throwing in the kitchen sink. Jobless benefit extension, more targeted stimulus to Democrat voters, etc.
AND THEY ARE TRYING TO BOOST THE DEBT LIMIT BEFORE THE TEA PARTY CAN STOP IT.
Do not let this happen.
There Is No Urgency For All These Matters. Instruct your GOP Congress critter to wait for the new Congress to get all these items addressed.
When democrats give you a tax brake in one place expect a tax increas in ten other places, note history.
