Yeah, the Coast Guard, I am surprised that the CIC doesn’t even know how many services there are. The Coast Guard was a service before the Marines were, the Marines used to be an attachment to the Navy, now they are their own service.

Not to quibble, but the Coast Guard was formed in 1915. The were originally created in 1790 as the Revenue-Marine (later renamed Revenue Cutter Service) within the Treasury Department. The Marines were formed in 1775 according to their lineage.

The legal basis for the Coast Guard is Title 14 of the United States Code, which states: “The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times.” Upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy.
