As an ex-Coastie, I’d say the CG is better off when he forgets about them. :-)

A lot of us tried to join the CG to keep out of The Vietnam War—little did we know.

I had to join the Navy because the CG was already full of draft dodgers.

“Draft dodging” wasn't a bad thing when you joined a service other than the Army and Marines—so as not to end up as a grunt humping the paddies in the sights of Kalashnikovs.
You still ran the risk of combat.
