A family noodle shop in Yuen Long has become the world's cheapest eatery awarded the coveted Michelin star. In an unprecedented move, the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2011, which was released yesterday, handed out one star to the eatery serving a bowl of wonton noodles for HK$16.
Ho To Tai, which means "good quality till the end," is one of 13 new restaurants with stars in the third edition of the fine dining bible.
Wonton noodles, dried prawn noodles and dumplings stuffed with fish skin are the most popular dishes listed in the guide.
"We are surprised with the recognition," said Chan Ki-ho, co-owner of the noodle shop. "I believe local diners and tourists are attracted by the freshness and quality of our ingredients. We make egg and shrimp noodles every day in our own factory a few blocks away."
His family has run the business since 1949, offering dishes from HK$16 to HK$35.
The new Michelin guide includes 309 establishments in Hong Kong and Macau, including four three-star, 12 two- star, and 53 one-star establishments.
Michelin guides director Jean-Luc Naret said nearly one-fifth of this year's selections are simple food stalls serving local cuisine in a lower price range.

Proof that good food doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to enjoy it.
About $2. Very reasonable, actually.
HK$16 is about $2 American.
I don’t know what it is in real money.
Around two dollars? Not bad.
My kinda price....see what I mean? You don’t have to splurge to get food your palate will approve of.
I guess. I don’t like seafood though, heh.
I also don’t know what a Michelin Guide is or what an HK dollar is worth in US$.
Other than that, great article. :\
I need to find more good Chinese/Asian places in North Texas... I've heard Richardson, TX has some worthy Asian restaurants... I need to go check them out.
In the mean time I settle on 3-6-9 BBQ in Plano... not bad, but I want more... always MORE :-)
Wouldn't surprise me at all if it did, though--LOL!
Go to the Kirin Court Chinese Restaurant in Richardson and have the deep fried spare ribs. Mmmm. They’re to die for.
