"We are not going to deport 11 million people," Gingrich said Thursday as he kicked off his first forum on Latino issues. "There has to be some zone between deportation and amnesty."

There is.

Make it impossible for shady employers to hire illegals, get rid of birthright citizenship for the children of illegals, and deny them benefits.

OK, keep one benefit for them - a free bus ticket to the border.

But the point is, they will self-deport if the first three are done.

BTW, Newt, you just kissed your slim chances of winning the GOP nomination in 2012 goodbye. The GOP is not interested in someone who wants to out-McCain McCain.

I'll add something else that can be done to get them to “self” deport.

Do what they do with drug dealers and their ill gotten gains. Seize everything they have if they are caught in the country illegally. If they leave they can take their ill gotten gains with them.

“Make it impossible for shady employers to hire illegals, get rid of birthright citizenship for the children of illegals, and deny them benefits.”

Isn’t that what he said?

Gingrich floated the idea Thursday that credit card companies could be tasked with creating ID cards that track workers’ legal status.

“Let’s find someone who actually knows what they’re doing,” he said. “It should be possible for any employer, anyone in the United States, as fast as you swipe your ATM card to get cash, to swipe a card to know whether or not they’re able to hire you.”

The GOP is not interested in someone who wants to out-McCain McCain.

With respect, because I've got a lot of it for you, let me modify your statement.

The GOP is most definitely interested in someone who wants to out-McCain McCain. However, conservatives aren't, and I daresay the American people aren't. The tipping point is very finely balanced.
