My impression was that Steve was more of a conservationist.

I have friends who own a zoo and were friends with Steve. He was mellowing in his enviro hippy attitudes. They had high hopes for him. They believe he was moving in the direction of anti enviro. Private zoo owners are extremely hostile to animal rights groups and government enviro regs. Steve’s wife has been a wacko since before he met her.
