How about Palin/Romney? Palin would get the conservative vote here, Romney would get the RINO and independent vote. Together they could garner more votes than either could probably get alone.

And then Palin would be president, with Romney a fig-leaf of moderate-ism to satisfy the GOP machine.

That is a very likely scenario, similar to then Gov. Ronald Reagan choosing George H.W. Bush as his running mate.
