Visitors to the Los Angeles Auto Show are wooed by the vehicles' futuristic designs and the promise of fuel savings, but many tire-kickers raise worries about how they would keep the cars powered up.
So amid a flurry of announcements about ever more clean-fuel models coming to market, industry officials kept busy touting how there was a growing network of public and private charging stations available for electric vehicle operators.
"Southern California is really quite close to completing this electric web," said Mike Sullivan, who sells clean-fuel cars at his chain of LACarGuy dealerships in the Southland.
Sullivan's company has begun getting permits for and installing chargers at branches in Santa Monica and Hollywood a process that takes about three months per unit. Visitors will be able to charge at the stations, made by Auburn, Calif.-based ClipperCreek Inc., for free.
"The psychological aspect of it is really the first threshold," said Sullivan, who is eagerly awaiting two plug-in hybrids a Toyota Prius and a Fisker Karma for his personal use. "Buyers need to see the chargers and know they're there before they'll really be comfortable shopping for the cars."
Free? Really?
Considering what gas costs, I’m tempted. Almost!
People are going to rip off their neighbors, big box stores, etc., to juice up their electric cars. The 21st Century version of the siphon hose.

Is this the one connected to the grid that has the rolling brown-outs?
I hope these electric cars sell like hotcakes. That leaves more gasoline for those of us who like to drive real cars. I am encouraged by the upcoming muscle car wars with the 550hp Shelby GT500, 556hp Camaro Z/28 and the 476hp Challenger. Now please bring back 93 octane.
No, it's connected to the grid with permanent blackouts. Ya get what'cha pay fer. Good luck with that...
for free.
I’ll bet they won’t even question illegals who drive these ‘lectric scooters. Plug in with no ID.
Does free mean the government pays for it? Free, like welfare “benefits”? I wonder if liberals know where electricity comes from?
Free. Meaning, I don’t pay.
But, it is not free.
The gov’t subsidizies the cost to the power company.
One or two pugged in at one time is not a big deal.
But, hundreds of cars on the charge at the same time will eat some juice.
Thanks. That is what I thought.
I've been discussing this since the Volt was in R&D. CA's electricity generating capacity is maxed out, no coal or nukes plants allowed, and the state is anti-petroleum products. Since the state is bankrupt, how many more windmills can it buy to charge up these silly electric cars? Oh wait, just burn food (ethanol) but it takes 1,700 gallons of water to produce a gallon of ethanol, but there's a water shortage. No problem, build de-salinization plants. Funding? No problem. Raise taxes.
It never ends with these morons.
Coal burners. That’s not “clean fuel”.
