Reno Mayor Bob Cashell, a former Republican state chair and Nevada lieutenant governor, said last week that the rightists in the Nevada Senate are not representative of the party. Cashell was reacting to the way far-right senators mustered enough votes in the Senate GOP caucus to force Washoe Sen. William Raggio out as Republican floor leader after Raggio grudgingly supported Democratic U.S. Sen. Harry Reids reelection.
I think it was very petty, Cashell said. I think it was very vindictive. These people claim to be Ronald Reagan conservatives, and theyre not. I knew Ronald Reagan. He asked me to join the Republican Party when I was a conservative Democrat, and Im still a conservative Republican. Ronald Reagan felt there was room for all of us in the tent to agree to disagree and not say vile things about each other. But when you come out and youve got people, they want to get their pound of flesh, I think its terrible. I think its very, very disturbing to the whole organization. Its splitting the organization.
Cashell, who switched from the Democratic to Republican Party on Aug. 12, 1983, said it was Raggio who succeeded in putting a time limit on a tax increase in the Democratic-majority Senate at the last legislature when the rightists were refusing to be involved.
And I think that Sen. Raggio has been a very strong leader in the Republican Party all these years. If it hadnt been for him there wouldve been no sunset on the last tax increase. Sure, hes gone for tax increases. No is not the answer to politics, and the RINOs are not Raggio and I. The RINOs [Republicans in name only] are the other people to the far, far right.
Hallelujah!
Another self absorbed politician who needs to wear a belt AND suspenders to keep his pants up.
Be gone RINO!!
He’s not a RINO now. He’s a DIABLO.
Poor babies...! Conservatives are mucking up their playground.
Your bias is showing, Mr. Journalist.
Gee. It’s just so mean to expect Republican floor leaders to support the Republican Senate candidate. Especially when the Democrat is Harry Reid.
So did Raggio and his pals think that disloyalty to the GOP would be ignored by his colleagues?
In his business career, Bob serves as Chairman of the Board of Cashell Enterprises a hotel casino management company. Bob and his son Rob, own and operate the Alamo Travel Plaza and the Topaz Lodge.
Reno Mayor Bob Cashell, a former Republican state chair......backed Harry Reid in the 2010 campaign. Cashell is not only not a RINO, he's not a Republican, any more than Reid or his mobster friends are.

Sharron Angle, the Republican nominee for Senate in Nevada against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, has already lost one big-name Republican in the state: Reno Mayor Bob Cashell, who had previously supported Sue Lowden in the GOP primary — and now says he’s supporting Harry Reid.
“I think Sharron Angle is just too far to the right for me,” Cashell said on Wednesday, in an interview with the local NBC affiliate. “She’s an ultra-right winger. I can’t support her. I don’t support her.”
Cashell elaborated: “Oh she’s wild. She’s wild. I mean, with the wild ideas she has going back to Washington, our state will suffer and we would never get anything done. And so I’m supporting Harry Reid, and I will go all the way for Harry Reid.”
This is some of the most bizarre reasoning I’ve seen.
He quotes Reagan’s big-tent philospophy. Reagan also said “thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican.”
So...wouldn’t that extend to “thou shalt not support a Democrat against a fellow Republican even if you don’t agree 100% with said Republican?”
???
Hank
I wonder if this maroon plans on running for re-election and when?
These clowns are part of the ruling class Republican party of Nevada that destroyed Angle’s chances during the recent election. Plain and simple explanation....follow the money. Reid had them in his back pocket.
I think that that is the very essence of RINOsity.
I think all we have to do is follow the casino money in this case.
Besides the fact the guy is a freaking liar by saying he didn’t endorse Reid when he absolutely did!
Reno Mayor Bob Cashell was first elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. Cashell has said that his 2010 bid for one more term will be the last. Past political experience includes serving on the University of Nevada Board of Regents from 1979 to 1982 and a term at Lieutenant Governor of Nevada from 1982 to 1986. Cashell is in the hotel/casino business in the Reno area.
