Even Ronald Reagan found difficulty assaying to debate an opponent in his midterm election, and all other sitting presidents who participated in debates did worse. So I wouldn't count too much on being able to induce Obama to participate in a debate, even knowing that the "objective moderator" deck is always stacked in favor of the Democrat in debates.Anyone who needs a teleprompter even in an informal setting is unlikely to do well in debate against a quick-witted opponent in any event.
So the Republican candidate in '12 should plan on challenging Obama to an Internet debate in which the participants are not co-located. This would impose minimal constraints on a candidate's schedule, so it would be the more effective as a challenge difficult to refuse. And, if the challenge is in fact refused, the plan would of course be to debate an empty chair. Perhaps one with a TelePrompter sitting in it . . .
