NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN 65), will celebrate its 49th birthday on Thursday.

The Big E's birthday celebration will take place as the crew celebrates Thanksgiving.

With the exception of USS Constitution, the Enterprise is the oldest commissioned warship in the Navy. CVN-65 is the eighth U.S. ship bearing the name Enterprise and was commissioned Nov. 25, 1961.

Well, happy birthday, Enterprise.

That is the naval craft that played an important role in modern history, and stands as a bulwark of our freedom.

God bless the ship, and the men that sail upon her.

What’s CVN-65 stand for?

"CV" is the designator for aircraft carrier, "N" designates nuclear powered, "65" indicates it was the 65th CV ordered.

“C” means aircraft carrier, “V” indicates fixed wing and “N” stands for nuclear powered. So CVN means (in Navy-speak) “aircraft carrier, fixed wing, nuclear powered”.

the Enterprise is the 65th fleet carrier.

so, CVN-65

CVN stands for Aircraft Carrier Nuclear (powered). The number shows it was the 65th Carrier built.

The next carrier to be built is CVN-78, the USS Gerald R. Ford.

Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh.
Farewell to college joys, we sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay.
Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more. Here’s wishing you a happy voyage home

Let me hasten to add that the Navy has done weird things with their numbering over the years. When they commissioned the Seawolf subs they began their hull numbers at 21 - indicating that it was the sub for the 21st century or some such crap. So those three are SSN21 through 23. They went back to the correct sequence with the Virginia’s - the last of the Los Angeles class is SSN-773 and the first of the Virginia’s is SSN-774.

Actually, CVN is: Cruiser aViation Nuclear powered. (Carriers were originally considered have a scouting/screening role like Cruisers. And they couldn't be CA "Aircraft Cruiser", because at the time, CA was "Armoured Cruiser".)
