Why is President Barack Obama — the son of a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya — considered a black man?

While historic, social, political and more sinister factors almost certainly influence the prevailing view of the president’s race, a new study co-authored by a University of California, Davis, researcher has found that a basic learning pattern also is involved.

People learn about new things — such as diseases, dogs or cars — by noting attributes that distinguish them from the same types of things that they already know, past research has shown.

The new study by UC Davis psychology professor Jeffrey Sherman and two colleagues demonstrated for the first time that the same basic learning pattern also applies when people place others into ethnic categories based on facial characteristics.

“Features that are more typical of minority group members draw more attention,” Sherman explained. “So, when someone has a mixture of features, the minority features are the ones that we tend to grab onto. We pay more attention to them and they are used more heavily in our judgments. They influence us to a greater degree.”

I don't see Obama as a black man. Not in the American sense, anyway. He acts whiter and snobbier than most white people I know, and he has no distinguishable American traits, white or black. He seems like he would be extremely uncomfortable in traditional black American settings (or for that matter, traditional white American settings). Can you imagine this guy in a Baptist church, for example? Or at a rap concert? Or an R&B concert for that matter? Or any concert? Can you see him at a backyard BBQ? Can you see this damned fraud doing anything American at all?

I've known American "blacks" who were as fair as I am, but they wanted to be called blacks, so I humored them. The whole business of race annoys me. I may have German, Scots, English, and Cherokee DNA, but I am none of those things. I am an American, I suppose of mixed race.

Given where part of the family comes from, some distant African blood would not surprise me or appall me--but I wouldn't start calling myself black, either. I'd still be the same American.

Obama reminds me of some foreign professorial types who never quite become part of the local American culture because they're just a little too superior to be part of mere American culture.
