Delay, a Republican who was nicknamed “The Hammer” because of his heavy-handed style, was accused of conspiring to funnel $190,000 of corporate money through the Republican National Committee, which sent $190,000 in campaign donations to seven GOP candidates for the Texas House.

State law prohibits corporations from giving donations to candidates directly or indirectly.

The article reveals that it was Texans For Public Justice which brought the complaint. Guess who fund them?

While he may or may not have violated state law (wasn’t it said that the law was passed AFTER the alleged crime) the jury wanted to reach a conviction and were pressing the judge on FEDERAL law questions.

Much like the Supreme Court gods in black robes, they knew the conclusion and had to find an argument to get them there.
