I worked at an airport on a terminal project as my first engineering job. In order to work there I had to get cleared and a badge was issued. The investigation was done, at the time, with finger prints and computers.

I know the airport where I worked had the flight attendants be cleared to get a badge. This was well before 9-11. In essence, the flight attendants have been already screened. Now, that’s not saying one could go native, but at least there has been some investigation of their background.

The fact that flight attendants and pilots can be targeted is nothing new, this has been know since the “early days” of air piracy. Pilots and flight attendants do go through security background checks. I am not sure how extensive they are. Like other background checks, these aren’t always perfect. I worked on the new terminal at IAD in 1997 and I was required to go through a background check. Had I not been able to account for the ten years prior as far as references and employement, I would have been denied a badge to work at IAD, DCA, or BWI. I also had to submit finger prints (my prints to this day are well know by FBI computers). We had badges that allowed us to access to the cockpit and the airfield. In Fact, I was allowed to drive on the tarmat and did several times a day, let alone a week. We also had our staging on the airfield.

I don’t think you know how profiling works.

Under the Israeli model, you know the one that actually works, EVERYONE is “profiled”. When you go to purchase a ticket, a background check is run on the purchaser. Moreover, certain indicators from the ticket purchase might trigger a flag, things like paying for the ticket in cash, purchasing a one-way ticket, originating from a high-risk area, ect... Then, before you check in, you are met by security officials trained in behavior analysis. These people will ask you questions about your destination, where you have been, your intentions, and based on your responses, and your general demeanor and nervousness, you might be selected for additional scrutiny. Security personal also walk the airport looking for behavioral indicators. Some people might even be subjected to an interrogation, in which they do not have a right to refuse to answer questions.

Something tells me that many of the folks here screaming about the TSA procedures really don’t want Israeli style procedures either, even though they do work.

The Israeli process works because EVERYONE is subjected to the behavioral analysis and profiling measures and those meeting the indicators are subjected to additional security screening.

Of course, this process doesn’t appeal to those who think that they should be free from any scrutiny, while only those who meet their amateur (TV fed) preconceived notions of what a terrorist looks like, are subject to screening.

No but I’ve been through Israeli security...

However I was not sexually assaulted neither was I a victim of porn screening...

A strip search is different than a groping...

I was decently covered and never criminally touched

Most of the TSA agents I have seen and encountered don’t appear to be highly educated and trained.

If TSA changed to a behavioral profiling method for initial screening, highly intelligent, well-trained people would be needed. TSA would no longer be a highly paid (relative to low skill needed) jobs program for Dem voters. Though it would be better for preventing terrorist attacks on planes, it probably won't happen....can't upset those voters /s

"Flight attendants, like pilots, are a known and trusted group."

So are concealed carry permit holders....

Muslims MUST BE MADE TO CONFORM TO THE SAME RULES AS WE THE PEOPLE.

This is infuriating. We The People are being treated like the enemy...the muslims are being treated with kid gloves..or specifically, “with their own hands.”

Call, email, fax, etc. these politicians and keep pounding them with these demands...THIS IS OUR COUNTRY AND WE HAD BETTER START FIGHTING FOR OUR RIGHTS...DO NOT BECOME COMPLAISCENT AND LAX. KEEP FIGHTING AND WIN!

While not excusing anything, what exactly would searching the copilot have found in this case?

I’m all for EVERYONE getting it just to put them to use as a pressure group for our side, but this case is a bad one to cite as proving anything about searches. No amount of searching would have found anything tangible.

This was a comment from a pulled post on your neighbor smoking..

Often the facts determine the ethics - you don’t seem to have enough information.

For-instance, if the reason his daughter doesn’t want him to smoke is because he leaves cigarettes burning all over the house - and there’s burn marks on all the furniture - then saying NO is part of the answer. The other part is to tell the daughter.

If he smokes outside so she won’t smell it - and leaves the children unattended and in possible danger - then ( see above )

If the daughter is a control freak who finally has Dad under her control for free child care and whatever other abuse she can pull off - then a talk with the old man over a smoke or two might be a good idea...

If the arrangement is safe for the children - and nonexploitive for the father - you could explain to him how to buy cigarettes without using you as the go-between. Mail order? A cab driving picking some up? Whatever. Why is a man getting social security able to take care of children but unable to get to a store? Guess what I’m saying is you need to get more facts before you start looking for the answer.
