TSA’s other body-scanner contractor is Rapiscan Systems Inc. In 2009, the company was awarded an agreement that could be worth up to $173 million. And like L-3, Rapiscan has a notable K Street presence.

Holland & Knight, Rapiscan’s outside lobbying firm, has earned $480,000 in fees from the company since May 2008, according to lobbying disclosure records. David Whitestone, a former aide to Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.), and John Buscher, once the chief lobbyist for United Airlines, are lobbying for the company.

Overall, Rapiscan has spent close to $3.6 million on lobbying since 2007, according to records.

"Rapiscan" - what an unfortunate choice of name - especially in print. I'm sure it's pronounced like "rapid", not like "rape", but . . .

I am so sick of this kind of thing. This reminds me of all kinds of outrages in Pentagon acquisition procedures, and the fiasco of the “virtual” border fence with Boeing. There should be no lobbying or anything like it involved in the consideration of these kinds of systems and equipment. They should be assessed by a blind process, solely on their efficacy, merits and cost, without the people who make the final decision knowing what company they are choosing. And politicians who accept campaign donations should be kept at arms’ length from the process.

It’s discouraging. Everything/everybody is for sale and the taxpayers foot the bills.

I’d be surprised if Daschle’s wife wasn’t in on this ,too.

Isn’t she a airline lobbyist of some sort?

The CEO of Rapiscan is a friend and contributor of Obama’s. He was invited and went on Obama’s India trip.
