Page 136-7: “The company promoted me to the position of financial writer. . . . Then one day, as I sat down at my computer to write an article on interest-rate swaps, something unexpected happened. Auma called. I had never met this half-sister; we had written only intermittently. I knew that she had left Kenya to study in Germany. . . . She was coming to the States . . . Could she come to see me IN NEW YORK? . . . Here’s the flight information [a “few weeks later]. . . . But two days before she was scheduled to arrive Auma called again. . . ‘I can’t come after all,’ she said. ‘One of our brothers, David . . . he’s been killed.’”
David supposedly died while Barry worked in NYC for the Business Intl. Corp., after graduating from Columbia, before moving to Chicago.
thanks, sharp eyes! It was Heidelberg that threw me, Heidelberg is mentioned when she arrives in Chicago.
NEW YORK is where it was...but what does that really tell us? The book has no dates. It doesn't tell us when he first went to Kenya. The Kenya article says 1983, shortly after the 'old man' died.
In 1983, if there was a 'David' he would still have been alive.
