No mention in the article of “Lorenzo’s Oil”, another adjunct to ketogenic dieting.
It’s pretty amazing that a diet that’s been around for decades can eliminate seizures no drug can touch.
Great article! It does this low carber good to read things like this. I am on a high protein diet because I am hypoglycemic. I think I have been for 40 years but I finally found a doctor who actually LISTENED to me. It didn’t hurt that she herself is hypoglycemic and she recognized all my symptoms! After almost 3 months of eating no sugar, white flour or simple carbs of any kind, I am finally feeling great! My blood sugar is stable. If it can’t be cured with a pill, today’s doctors don’t know what to do so they tell you you have anxiety or whatever! As the saying goes...you are what you eat!
Epilepsy is such a broad term. There are so many types, causes and unknowns. If a family has found something that works, God Bless them. The vast majority of seizure disorders are controlled by medicine; for those that aren’t it is a nightmare.
Very interesting! My heart goes out to the families that are trying this diet.

The Ketogenic diet has been around for awhile now. Another option for some, when drugs don’t work, is seizure surgery. It’s not for everyone, but it has proven successful in many cases.
The ketogenic diet is tough on the child and parent alike, but not as tough as unrelenting, uncontrollable seizures. I've seen kids have even more than 150 a day. That child is essentially living in a fog. It's difficult to function and learn when most of one's time is spent not fully conscious.
I've also seen children who have had hemispherectomies, where half the brain is removed. These children usually functioned almost as well after the surgery as before, because the constant seizures had more or less destroyed all function on one side.
The ketogenic diet definitely has a place in the medical treatment of children with epilepsy.

He was completely med free by mid 1st grade and we've never seen any symptoms since.
I can't imagine how hard it would be if the meds don't work since we had such great success.
The only thing I see that may be wrong with the kid’s diet is a lack of greens.
He should at least be taking a dry powered greens mix, and some chlorella and spirulina.
He’ll never have to worry about a heart attack anyway; the fats will protect him from that problem.

I’m trying something similar to keep weight off. It has not been easy. I was eating mostly meats, cheeses, and veggies, and — for breakfast — low-carb cereals. My bowels locked up, so now I eat raisin bran and flavored yogurts (high in carbs, unfortunately), so that fiber and bacteria will keep this nightmare at bay.
