Twelve years ago, I stood on the plinth of Nelson’s Column in the pouring rain, addressing a crowd of 10,000 people. We had marched through central London in the biggest ever demonstration against Britain joining the euro, a course then being daily urged on us by the BBC, with the aid of such Euro-zealots as Michael Heseltine, Chris Patten, Kenneth Clarke and Sir Leon Brittan.
At the time, Mayor Ken Livingstone was calling for the removal of the two statues of Victorian generals that stand on each side of Trafalgar Square. I therefore jokingly began by suggesting that, if they were to be replaced, this might be with a very small statue of John Major, for negotiating Britain’s opt-out from the euro at Maastricht, and a much larger statue of Sir James Goldsmith. To save the euro from disintegration means shedding devalued economies like Greece and Ireland. The EU can’t afford to bail them out or see the rest of the Continent carried along with them in the economic undertow.
I always wondered how they expected to establish the Euro without a strong federal state in Europe. The United States owes its existence to Hamilton’s genius, backed by the unrivaled leadership of Washington. Neither Madison not Jefferson had a clue about the workings of a commercial society.
I disagree, they can’t shed Greece, Ireland etc because their goal is to take control of them. The Germans want to get control of Europe literally by default.
Tell that to the national taxpayers who would be on the hook. Such a bailout is unpopular in Germany, France and the UK and any politician who pushed for it would be out of office in those countries.
Hamilton’s genius? Could you please elaborate? I thank you in advance.
The assumption bill, which nationalized the States’ debts, backed by the taxing power of the United States, established the credit of the United States and the dollar.
First they established the Euro, fully knowing that there would eventually be a crisis (even though they probably thought it would be a more manageable one), and like someone said, the EU elite does not let any crisis go past them without using the opportunity to centralize power in their own hands even more.
And that is what they are doing, creating that federal (without the federalism unfortunately) control over national budgets. Eventually they will have a unified budget and tax structure if they are not stopped.
I don´t believe it is a german project like you say. I mean, of course the german political elite is in on the racket, but they are a junior partners to especially the french. They don´t have, or haven´t had up until now the same leverage as others, because of their eternal guilt trip, which prevents them from standing up for themselves.
If the german population would set their foot firmly down and say no more, we are not going to pay for others and that they would want to stop the war reparation which the EU basically is the conduit for (especially the Common Agricultural Policy), this project would be no more.
But the germans growing a spine, no sadly we won´t see that anytime soon.
The fact of the matter remains a bailout is not going to happen. Europe’s strong economies don’t want to prop up its weakest ones.
Those have to swim or sink.
I remember rereading the Federalist Papers this summer when the Euro crisis first gained visibility. Page after page gave well thought out reasons why the EU would fail if not have substantial problems.
It is allready happening, despite Angela Merkels claims. They have created this wast welfare system for states, called the EU, and they can´t afford it any more, but they even less can afford to loose it as a power basis, so they are not going to allow anyone to see that they don´t need it and can stand on their own.

My husband, who spends most of his time dealing with local and state goverments, has recently read “Hamilton”, and is going to reread it.
He’s now reading the “Federalist Papers”.

I just can’t see the Germans in such a positive light. They are the ones who keep pushing the bailouts, despite what their people want. The French populace is generally worthless, but I think Sarkozy is the one we will be backing when push comes to shove. England is not in the Eurozone so they are not on the hook for the bailouts. I don’t know that they would sit idly as the Germans and one worlders come in and take over the Irish political system however. England and Ireland would be a strange alliance, but I would have to think it would be better than the Euros taking over. Also keep in mind the French and English are now tied together militarily. I would have to think the US would back France and England again over Germany and Austria. This is some scary stuff. All these politicians are currently in the one-worlder crowd, but the people are starting to rise up and I don’t see it ending pretty. Let’s hope they keep in mind the common enemy - Islam. We need to start in the Balkins and work our way East.
I am not sure I follow you exactly. There is not going to be a war in Europe anytime soon, if you are referring to that. Certeinly not between different nations, as the political elites of them have become utterly united and intertwined in protecting their interests against the general population.
The discontent against this isn´t great enough, as people generally just don´t care where their political leaders are leading them, but most importantly, there isn´t enough children to man any kind of fights. People who have only one child or two are not going to send them into a fight. But the muslims are a danger and will continue to outbreed the rest, and demand more autonomy and concessions from the unprincipled leaders. The EU ensures there will be slow, but long death of Europe for at least a few more generations.
