WASHINGTON—The House rejected a three-month extension of benefits for the long-term unemployed Thursday, with benefits set to lapse for some on Nov. 30.

The vote was a setback to congressional Democrats, who are hoping to keep the program alive despite Republican opposition.

The vote gave the bill majority approval, 258-154, but it failed because Democratic leaders brought the measure to the floor under fast-track procedures, which require a two-thirds majority to pass.

Hell yes it’s sanity. Democrats had no way to pay for it. They wouldn’t even discuss it with the Republicans.

They didnt want this to pass, so they ‘fast tracked’ it to require 2/3 vote, so they could then blame Republicans

About damn time! We all know what would’ve happened if this came to a vote 3 weeks ago.

60% of the public will view this as “cruel and unusual”. The Republicans are going to gather quite a bit of negative press over the next 2 years ala the MSM. Hope it doesn’t come back to bite us in 2012. The sheeple are so stupid though.

Republicans should bring a bill to extend the unemployment benefits for 3 months (temporary) offset by immediate cuts (permanent) to another government program like, I dunno, NPR or the Arts or something. Make the Democrats vote against that!

Till next year, they can't get their bills out of committee to get to a vote. The committee chairmen rule.

Republicans said they didn'ot oppose extending the benefits but that they wanted to heed the midterm-election outcry against deficit spending.

Then the Republicans need to immediately submit a bill specifically identifying where they will make cuts to fund this, thus clearly differentiating themselves from the deficit-happy Democrats. That puts the ball back in the Dems court; either vote for the bill with the cuts, or be responsible for cutting off unemployment for thousands of families. And at Christmas, too.

They should still write up the bill, submit it to the committee, mail it to the white house, all the networks (including FOX) and post it online for everyone to see. Then every spokesperson who is on a network news program needs to say out loud that "The committe should allow debate on the bill we introduced ### that will extend the benefits and identified exactly how it was to be paid for.

I bet if these “benefits” weren’t extended, a lot of those people would find jobs.

What is the cost of all this so far, $300 billion or more? We need job creation in the real market, not federal jobs that further weaken the economy or fake “shovel ready” jobs that cost $800 thousand per hire. The Democraps have been in full vote buying mode with our tax dollars, and there is nothing but more misery to show for it. Make the insanity stop. We would have been better off without the stimulus, and without the unemployment extensions. People could have real jobs now.

I would like to see all committee actions put up on the web.

Insurance for the prescribed time was OK as we pay for that through a 3% salary reduction, but this never ending welfare is a different story.
