If education and awareness dont work, the Department of Transportation Secretary has some other interesting ideas on how to lower the number of distracted drivers careening down the pavement. It seems people still havent gotten the voicemail about the dangers of cell phone use in cars and if the trend continues, the Department of Transportation may have to do something about it like forcibly disabling your Blackberry. While Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood stressed personal responsibility in a recent TV appearance, the Secretary said the department was looking into other technological possibilities.

The manufacturer of the jamming company probably wouldn't pay enough money for the bribe. Now they'll look for another sucker.
I wonder if anybody will ever find a market for “Deflated Trial Balloons”.....
This is up to the States, not the Department of Transportation. If the States really want to take this on and if it is a problem within the individual States, then put a $5000.00 fine on using cell phones in a vehicle....BY A DRIVER.
Remember, a police state is a safe state for the police and their masters.
Agree, the only way to stop undesired behavior is to make the punishment a true deterrent. Same with DUI, if a thousand dollar fine doesn’t do it, make it possible to confiscate the vehicle on first offense. Having to make car payments for a few years on a car that you lost by being stupid would be a good deterrent, I think.
Cell phone Jamming is the dumbest idea ever.
So the Fed mandates special 911 features on cell phones and now they are wanting to mandate jamming.
I guess if you get in a wreck and you have to use the cell phone to call for help, well too bad your phone is jammed and you die. You can’t sue the lawmakers who make these innane laws.
California has a fine for using a cell phone while driving but I think, not sure, it’s only $25.00. That doesn’t stop anyone. If a law is broken, make the fine hurt and maybe, just maybe, people will pay attention. Just like politicians. Take the money away from them and they will pay attention.
If they expect people to believe they’re not interested in jamming cell phones, I’ll sell you one of NY’s various bridges.
You mean our Gestapo Government back down on this. Will wonders ever cease?
Every idea coming out of the DOT, including this one is pure crap. The last Brainstorm was promoting the GM VOLT as the answer to clean commuter transportation until we discovered that the MSRP was over $40,000.00 and there still is no plan to dispose of the batteries when they are used up.
If cellphones are so dangerous, why is the number of people dying in auto accidents declining?
There is no danger, it is simply a means of controlling people.
Department of Transportation = low hanging fruit.
Zero out their budget, fire the whole departmet. Not only will America feel NO pain, it will be healthier.
None of this is within the purview of the Federal Government. The states are PERFECTLY capable of dealing with it on their own.

DOT probably just found out that the jammers would interfere with their ‘GPS’ tracking devices they want installed in all cars so as to tax us per mile that we drive.
