Israel is in talks with the United States to acquire an additional 20 Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jets, a senior Israeli defense official said on Wednesday.

Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi said Israel would welcome another 20 fighter jets on the heels of a deal signed in October to buy about 20 of the radar-evading jets at a cost of about $96 million per aircraft.

"As I understand -- and that's the latest information I have on this issue -- it's still under negotiation between the Israeli government and the administration," he said, speaking at a news conference alongside Admiral Mike Mullen, the top U.S. military officer.

"I don't know the final decision," Ashkenazi said.

Some media had reported the Obama administration offered the additional jets to Israel in exchange for a three-month freeze on construction of new settlements, a key issue in efforts to broker Israeli-Palestinian peace.

I still can’t believe we’re going to sell these to Turkey. That is going to bite us in the ass someday.

I still can’t believe we’re giving 20 top flight fighter jets to Israel for nothing more than a three month settlement construction freeze. What a nice Christmas present!

The left - both in the US and the Obamaist left in israel - is trying to present this as something that Israel would accept. It is pure BS. Bibi would be kicked to the curb if he took the bait. And the F35, without Israel avionics (which the US has banned), is a stinking albatross anyway which will likely never get finished properly.

The way this project has been going, that south-korea/japan 6th-generation fighter may be available before the F35. Israel would do well to orient itself completely away from the US, both on defense and trade. In fact, anything else is suicide.

Sniff... sniff...

Racialist questions seem to be most of what you’re about, Chiltepe. I find that somewhat suspect.

Oh please, spare us the neocon demagoguery. Your feigned sensitivity to “racialism” is touching, but entirely transparent with the briefest glance at your posting history. If I’m suspect at all, you’re a single-minded Dalek shouting “Exterminate! Exterminate!” Honestly, what a laugh!
